This article examines life and studies of Yeoljae So Hak-kyu (1859∼1948), a modern Confucianist. He was born in Iksan, Jeollabuk-do and a student of Ganjae Jeonwu. He brushed up his study for himself in his youth and became a pupil of Ganjae over at the age of forty. He stressed practice more than theory. His studies can be summarized as 'Truly know and do in practice (眞知實踐).' Theoretical research on Neo-Confucianism was not his primary issue. His studies were mainly about following teacher's theories and respecting authority of the theories, which were strictly kept for Yeoljae's entire life. Although his contributions in thoroughly following the scholarly mantle of Ganjae and developing the school are recognized, it is challenging to find theories with his own characteristics or uniqueness, which makes his studies' limitations. Significance of his life and studies could be found in practice of the teachings of Confucius saying 'Firmly believe, love learning, guard by the death and realize righteousness (篤信好學, 守死善道).'

이 글은 근세 유학자 소학규(蘇學奎: 1859∼1948)의 생애와 학문을 고찰한 것이다. 소학규는 전라북도 익산(益山) 출신으로 간재(艮齋) 전우(田愚)의 문인이다. 젊어서 문장을 연마하다가 마흔이 넘어서 간재의 문하에 들어갔다. 그는 이론보다 실천을 강조한 학인이었다. 그의 학풍은 ‘참으로 알고 실제로 행한다’는 진지실천(眞知實踐) 넉 자로 요약된다. 성리학에 대한 이론적 탐구는 학문 본령이 아니었다. 소학규의 학문은 스승의 학설을 따르고 스승의 학문적 권위를 옹위(擁衛)하는 것이었다. 이것은 일생토록 철저하게 지켜졌다. 그러나 간재의 학통을 철저하게 준수하고 학파의 발전에 기여한 점은 인정되지만 그 자신의 개성을 드러내 보이거나 독창성을 엿볼 수 있는 학설은 찾기 어렵다. 이것이 소학규의 학문이 지닌 한계성이다. 그의 생애와 학문은 공자가 이른바 “돈독하게 믿고 배우기를 좋아하며, 죽기로써 지키고 도를 잘 구현해야 한다”(篤信好學, 守死善道)고 한 성훈(聖訓)의 실천에서 의미를 찾을 수 있을 것 같다.
