Arthur Tappan Pierson(1837-1911) was a representative leader of the American Protestant Evangelical movement in the late nineteenth century. Ardently advocating the ecumenism of evangelicalism, Pierson was also famous as preacher, writer, mission facilitator, and lecturer particularly in America and Great Britain. In this article, the researcher classifies the life and ministry of Arthur Pierson into three stages. The first stage is the period of the birth, growth, education and conversion of Pierson from 1837 to 1960. The second stage begins from the year 1860 when he was ordained with the graduation from Union Theological Seminary in New York and ends with the resignation of his pastoral ministry at the Bethany Presbyterian church in Philadelphia in 1889. In this period he experiences his pastoral ministries at the five different churches for about 30 years. The third stage(1889-1911) is characterized by the life of free-lance style of preacher and lecturer mostly in America and Great Britain, emphasizing world mission, urban ministry, ecumenism of evangelicalism, Bible ministry for the laity and Keswick spirituality. In this period, one thing to be noticeable is that Pierson was invited as the interim and later succeeding preacher to Charles Spurgeon by the Metropolitan Tabernacle church in London in the fall of 1892. Arthur Pierson was the preacher of Spurgeon's church which was then the largest church in the world for two years succeeding to Spurgeon's ministry. How was it possible for Pierson, a presbyterian pastor, to be the preacher of the Metropolitan Tabernacle Baptist church? What were the characteristics of Pierson's preaching and theology described in his sermons held at Spurgeon's church? When Pierson became the preacher of Spurgeon's church, he was in his prime as a preacher because he had already spent the 30 years of the pastoral ministry in America and he was actively working in England and Scotland as the circuit lecturer based on the faith mission. Accordingly it is the researcher's argument that Pierson's preaching spoken at the Metropolitan Tabernacle church offers much insight and information on the theology and preaching features of Arthur T. Pierson. The researcher will analyze twelve sermons of Pierson held at Spurgeon's church in the fall of 1892 for the purpose of educing of the characteristics of Pierson's preaching.
