This paper tries to evaluate the relative importance of price competition (compared to non-price competition) in the Korea’s trade by examining the relative size of price and income elasticities of the country’s exports and imports. After applying linear regression estimation, the paper finds three distinctive features of Korea’s trade. First, relative price changes have little effect on trade. Secondly, non-price competition is much more important than price competition in Korea’s trade. Thirdly, Korea is strong in non-price competition in its trade vis-a-vis the rest of the world, which means that the Korean economy can grow faster than the rest of the world without suffering balance of payments problems in the long run as long as there are not strong and persistent net long- erm capital outflows. The policy implication of the estimation results is that relative price competition cannot be an effective measure to improve trade performance of Korea. The improvement in a country’s non-price competition may be the only solution to better trade performance.

이 논문은 한국의 수출입의 가격 및 소득탄력성의 상대적 크기를 추정하여 한국의 무역에 서의 비가격경쟁과 가격졍쟁의 상대적 중요성을 평가하려 한다. 선형회귀분석의 결과, 한국의 무역에서 3가지 특징적 형태가 발견되어진다. 첫째, 상대가격의 변화가 무역에 미치는 효과는 적은 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 한국의 무역에서 비가격경쟁이 가격경쟁보다 훨씬 중요한 것으로 나타났다. 셋째, 한국은 여타 국가에 비하여 비가격경쟁에서 우위를 보이는 것으로 나타났다. 비가격경쟁력에서의 상대적 우위는, 만일 지속적이고 강한 장기적 자본유출이 없다면, 한국이 국제수지 상의 문제없이 외국보다 장기적으로 더 빠른 경제성장을 달성할 수 있다는 것을 의미한다. 실증추정의 정책적 함의로는 가격경쟁력보다는 비가격경쟁력의 향상이 무역수지개선을 위한 효과적인 수단으로 나타났다.
