The main objective of the present work is to offer some sociological insights into how we might account for the fact that Korea has achieved unprecedented rapid economic growth in a limited span of time and what kind of social consequences it has yielded. The focus of analysis is on the human element, the principles of social organization, the institutional arrangements, and external conditions, relevant to explanations of the phenomena in question, as the central components of sociological approach. It is the qualities of human resources, the psychological make-up, major growth measures taken up by the state, mechanisms whereby main actors got involved in the process, and the international contexts of Korea's growth, that are singled out to explain how it was possible for Korea to take off and succeed. Various social and political implications of the basic stances and economic policies are examined in terms of what is defined as ʻLife Valuesʼ informed by the value-laden concept of societal development, such as life quality, life chances, structural flexibility, and social quality. Final reflections touch upon the future visions and requisites of an advanced society, with a special emphasis on the paradigm shifts in the direction of rationalization and upgrading of the system itself and basic social institutions, in addition to the inculcation of mature civic culture among the citizenry.

본 논문의 주요 목적은 한국이 제한된 시간 내에서 전례없는 고속 정장을 달성했다는 사실 을 어떻게 설명할 수 있는가 그리고 그 같은 성장이 어떤 사회적 결과를 야기했는가에 대한 사회학적 인식을 보여주는 것이다. 인적 요소, 사회조직의 원리, 제도적 장치 외적 조건에 분 석의 초점을 두었다. 이들이 문제의 현상을 설명하는데 적합한 것들로서 사회학적 접근의 중요 한 요소이기 때문이다. 인적 자원의 질, 심리적 기질, 국가의 성장정책적 조치와 그리고 이 정 책의 결정 메커니즘, 경제성장을 가져온 국제적 맥락 등, 이들이 한국의 도약과 성공을 어떻게 가능하게 했는가를 설명하는 중요한 요인들이다. 삶의 질, 삶의 기회, 구조적 유연성 사회적 질 등 사회발전의 규범적인 컨셉트로 표현되는“삶의 가치”의 관점에서 기본적인 태도와 경제 정책의 다양한 사회적 정치적 의미를 검토하는데 역점을 두었다. 이 논문에서 강조한 것은 미 래의 비전과 선진사회의 필요조건이다. 시스템 그 자체와 기본적인 사회제도를 합리화하고 업 그레이드하는 방향으로 패러다임을 바꾸어야 하고 또 성숙된 시민문화를 제고하는 일이 중요 하다는 점도 이 논문에서 각별히 강조한 점이다.
