The purpose of this study was to investigate the future direction for designing and developing digital textbook as a new teaching and learning media for the future learning generation based on the viewpoint of holistic education. Holistic education is founded on three basic principles - balance, inclusion, and connection. It is based on the premise that each person finds identity, meaning, and purpose in life through connections to the community, to the natural world, and to spiritual values. In the study, Whole-being, wholeness, connectedness, and ecology were presented as the fundamental principles(or main characteristics) of holistic education from the literature review. Based on these key concepts, some problems and limitations of current digital textbook and digital textbook-based instruction in classroom were discussed. In conclusion, flexible digital textbook facilitating both cognitive thinking and creative thinking together, convergent digital textbook integrating online and offline learning, formal and informal learning, general digital textbook based on universal design for learning, interactive textbook based upon online learning community, and expanded digital textbook reflecting the future classroom ecology were recommended as strategies for designing and developing digital textbook in the future.

이 연구는 지금까지 주로 기술과 기능 중심, 인지적 사고 중심, 개인적 학습활동 중심으로 개발·운영되어 온 디지털교과서가 다가오는 첨단 정보통신공학 사회, 유비쿼터스 사회에 미래 학습세대를 위한 교수학습 매개체가 되기 위하여 향후 어떤 방향으로 설계·개발·운영될 필요가 있는지를 홀리스틱 교육 관점에서 탐색해 보고자 하였다. 홀리스틱 교육은 전인적인 인간발달 측면, 전체적 조화를 강조하는 전일성, 관계를 중심으로 한 공동체 의식, 생활경험에 기반한 교육 등을 강조하는데, 이 연구에서는 홀리스틱 교육의 핵심적 특징을 전인성, 전일성, 관계성, 생태성으로 구분하고, 각각의 요소들이 미래 디지털교과서 설계·개발을 위해 어떤 시사점을 줄 수 있는지를 검토하였다. 결론적으로, 이 연구에서는 인지적·창의적 사고를 함께 촉진시키는 융통적 디지털교과서, 온라인과 오프라인, 형식학습과 비형식학습이 통합된 융합적 디지털교과서, 보편적 학습설계원리에 기반한 보편적 디지털교과서, 온라인 학습공동체에 기반한 상호작용적 디지털교과서, 미래 교실생태를 반영한 확장적 디지털교과서의 설계·개발을 제안하였다.
