With the great potential to help users acquire appropriate mental models of interactive systems, metaphors have been thought to be the ideal solution for designing effective interface. However, in many cases, usability problems with the use of metaphor in the interface is due to the general lack of understanding of the fundamental concept itself and verification of the utility as well. This results in extremely limited concept of user-interface metaphor to something along the lines of realistic representation of the physical world and coercion of highly uniform pattern. Metaphoric narratives must be decided selectively according to the contextual analysis around those system functions in careful consideration of the fact that metaphors are primarily structural. Consistent criticism into the concept and utility of metaphor is invaluable because of this. In this thesis, intimate concept of metaphor and conflicting views over its' functional utility is reviewed in considerable detail with the relation of modern graphic user interface.

새로운 개념을 기존의 익숙한 개념으로 대체하여 묘사하는 메타포의 양상은 사용자 심상모형의 용이한 구축을 유도하고 매체환경으로의 접근을 효율적으로 지원한다는 기능적 효용성으로 인해 인터페이스 디자인을 위한 이상적인 방법적 장치로 널리 활용되고 있다. 그런데 그 활용과 관련해 인터페이스에서 발생하는 사용성의 문제들은 많은 경우 메타포의 근본적인 개념과 유용성에 대한 충분한 검증의 부재에 기인하며, 이는 결과적으로 인터페이스 메타포의 개념을 물리적 형태의 가시적 재현과 같은 피상적인 수준에 머무르게 하고 획일화된 적용방식의 추종을 강요하는 양상으로 드러난다. 메타포의 본질적 효력이 표면적 형태의 이면에 내재된 구조적 성질로부터 기원함을 고려하면 인터페이스 메타포의 내러티브 양식은 시스템 기능 사이에서의 맥락적 고찰에 의해 선택적으로 결정되고 적용되어야 한다. 때문에 객관적 검증의 어려움에도 불구하고 메타포의 개념과 기능적 유용성에 대해 지속적으로 투영되는
비판적 관점은 올바른 인터페이스 디자인 방법론의 모색을 위해 중요한 의미를 갖는다. 따라서 본 논문
은 시스템의 의미구조를 효과적으로 표현하기 위해 흔히 활용되어왔던 메타포의 개념과 그 기능적 유용
성에 관한 상반된 견해를 그래픽 사용자 인터페이스 환경과의 상관관계 속에서 지적함으로써 메타포 활용의 실천적 양상에 대한 비판적 고찰을 시도하고자 한다.
