The purpose of this study was intended to uncover a folk theory grounded in the perspectives and experiences of Korean mothers on their children’s American education. The narratives of two Korean mothers were collected through three-phased phenomenological interviews. The findings revealed that Korean mothers emphasized the importance of education that resonated with their cultural belief in education leading to success. They viewed American education as a means to master the English language and thereby to optimize their children’s futures. While the mothers recognized the disadvantages inherent in their children’s minority status within the American educational system, their desire for English competency helped them seek out strategic involvement practices at home. Implications for minority parent involvement are discussed.

본 연구는 미국에 거주하고 있는 한인 어머니들이 지닌 자녀의 미국교육에 대한 인식과 경험을 민속이론에 근거하여 살펴보았다. 어머니 두 명의 나래티브 자료가 3차에 걸친 현상학적 면담을 통해 수집되었다. 연구결과 어머니들은 성공을 위해 교육을 중시하는 문화적 믿음에 부합한 견해를 나타내었고, 미국교육이 영어 숙달을 위한 기회를 제공하여 자녀의 장래를 최적화할 것으로 여기고 있었다. 어머니들은 미국교육에서 자녀가 지닌 소수민으로서의 불이익을 인식하였으나, 자녀들의 영어 역량을 높이려는 마음에서 전략적인 가정 부모참여 방안을 모색하였다. 연구결과를 토대로 소수민 가정의 부모참여에 관한 시사점을 논의하였다.
