If a program for lifelong education is to be considered effective, not only should it be able to help the learners to gain knowledge and skills during the program, but it should also facilitate them to sustain and solidify the learning they have gained, even after the program has finished. However, previous studies on program development in lifelong education have mainly dealt with the former issue, leaving the latter largely uncharted. This represents a considerable research gap that needs to be explored in order to further develop theory and practice within the field of program development in the lifelong education sector. The aim of this study was to explore the factors that help sustain the effect of a program, and to hopefully draw out some implications that may be useful in advancing theories in program development in the area of lifelong education. Based on analysis of data gathered from participant observations and in-depth interviews on a Marriage Encounter program, this study demonstrates that ‘the operation of follow-up programs', 'the presence of follow-up meetings among the learners', 'the opportunity for learners to practice and communicate their knowledge in real-life situations' are major factors that reinforce the effect of lifelong education programs. This study has shown that programs for lifelong education need to be developed in such a way that learners can have chances to practice the skills they have been taught in the program in their daily lives, and that they can share the skills developed within the course with others. Thus, the study suggests that the factors of praxis should be taken into consideration when attempting to promote long-term and lasting effects through lifelong education programs. Therefore, it is expected that future lifelong education programs will be developed so that learners can have chances to apply and appreciate their knowledge through actual practical experience, and to evaluate and advance their knowledge through discussing and explaining what they have learned.

평생교육 프로그램의 효과가 지속될수록 프로그램에 참여한 학습자의 삶의 질의 향상을 기대할 수 있다. 프로그램의 효과가 학습자의 내면 또는 생활세계의 삶과 관계되어 발현되기 때문이다. 이는 평생교육 프로그램을 개발할 때 효과를 지속시키는 요인을 융합하는 것이 필요하다는 것을 의미한다. 그러나 평생교육 프로그램의 효과를 지속시키는 요인에 대한 논의가 일천하여, 프로그램의 개발과 이론의 발전에 일정한 지체요인이 될 수 있다. 이 연구는 매리지 인카운터(ME) 프로그램 참여자를 대상으로 참여관찰과 심층면접을 통하여 프로그램의 효과 지속요인을 탐색하고, 프로그램의 이론과 개발을 위한 시사점을 도출하고자 하였다. 연구의 결과는 평생교육 프로그램의 효과를 지속시키는 요인이 후속프로그램의 실시, 후속모임의 결성과 운영, 학습내용의 실천과 공유라는 것을 보여준다. 이러한 연구결과는 평생교육 프로그램의 개발과정에서 학습내용을 생활세계에서 실천하고 실천 내용을 공유하는 과정을 포함해야 할 필요성을 제시하고 있다. 이를 위해, 기존의 프로그램에 이 실천과 공유 과정을 융합하여, 이를 프로그램의 개념으로 새롭게 확장할 것을 조심스럽게 제안한다.
