This study was designed to investigate the current culture of “dining-out”, how the culture has changed over time, and to analyze the problems associated with the current culture of dining-out, with a view to understanding the whole phenomena. The results of this study are as follows: Firstly, dining-out may be defined as eating a meal which has been prepared in any place other than your own home, excluding school feeding which is considered to be a passive method of dining. Over the past 45 years, the cost of dining-out has been steadily increasing. Secondly, in relation to the changes in dining-out culture in Korea since 1960, the culture of dining-out had stagnated in the 1960s, yet gathered pace again in the 1970s and continued to grow rapidly throughout the 1980s thanks to large-scale international events held in Korea during this period. The culture became polarized during the 1990s when high-grade and practical-worth were divided and pursued. Since the dawn of the new millennium, dining-out culture has become more diversified with the inclusion of games based on the modern predilection for activities that appeal to both individuality and health. Moreover, the frequency of children dining-out has increased in each decade, and if school feeding was included, since 2005 the majority of Korean children dine-out five to six times a week. Finally, the results of the study demonstrate that as the importance of dining-out in children’s dietary lives has increased, a rising number of associated health and environmental problems have surfaced, such as nutritional imbalance, food poisoning caused by unhygienic and unsafe dining-out environments, extravagance of resources due to excessive garbage, and the increasing menace of environmental pollution. Therefore, concerted efforts need be made in order to establish a more appropriate dining-out culture, which considers the health, hygienic and environmental needs of children.

본 연구에서는 아동 외식 문화와 관련된 전반적인 현상을 파악하기 위해서, 아동 외식 문화의 현황 및 변화 양상을 살펴보았으며, 이를 바탕으로 아동 외식 문화에서의 문제점을 분석하였다. 연구 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 외식은 식사 장소에 관계없이 가정 외의 장소에서 조리한 음식을 구입해 한 끼 분의 식사를 해결하는 경우로 수동적인 식사 형태인 학교급식을 제외한 식사라고 할 수 있으며, 지난 45년 동안 우리나라 가계 소비 지출에서 식료품비 지출이 차지하는 비율은 계속 감소하였으나 식료품비 중 외식비 지출비율은 지속적으로 증가하였다. 둘째, 우리나라 외식 문화는 1960년대 침체기, 1970년대 태동기를 거쳐 1980년 대규모 국제행사를 계기로 급성장했으며, 1990년에는 고급과 실속을 지향하는 양극화 단계였고 2000년대 이후에는 개성과 건강을 중시하는 그리고 놀이 문화를 겸한 다양한 외식 문화가 형성되고 있다. 시대에 따라 아동 외식 빈도는 증가하였으며, 학교급식을 외식의 범위에 포함하는 경우 2005년 이후에는 대부분의 아동이 주 5-6회 이상은 외식을 경험하는 것으로 나타났다. 셋째, 아동의 식생활에서 외식이 차지하는 비율이 증가하게 되면 영양적인 불균형으로 인한 건강상의 문제, 비위생적이며 불안전한 외식 환경으로 인한 식중독 문제, 과도한 음식쓰레기로 인한 자원낭비 및 환경오염 문제에 노출될 가능성이 높아지므로, 건강, 위생, 환경을 고려한 아동 외식 문화가 정착될 수 있도록 다각적인 노력이 필요할 것이다.
