The purpose of this study was to verify the effects of the mathematic-center activity based upon inquiry on the children's mathematical problem-solving ability and attitude. Participating in the study were 52 five-year-old children in kindergarten classrooms. The children in the experimental group engaged in a variety of mathematical explorations and inquiry involving problem solving, reasoning, and communication. The children in the comparative group used materials individually or sometimes two children played with dice following a procedure that had been explained to them. The collected data were analyzed by SPSS computer program and t-test was used to verify the differences between the experimental group and the comparative group. The results of this study were as follows: First, The experimental group's scores for mathematical problem solving ability were higher than the comparative group's. There were significant differences between the experimental group and the comparative group in classification, pattern, number, measurement but no significant differences in shape and statistics. Second, The children in the experimental group improved their attitude toward mathematics.

본 연구의 목적은 탐구중심 수․조작영역 활동을 구성하여 적용했을 때 이와 같은 경험이 유아의 수학적 문제해결력 및 태도에 영향을 미치는지 알아보는데 있다. 연구대상은 서울시 소재 K유치원 만5세 유아(A반 26명 실험집단, B반 26명 비교집단 임의 배정)로 선정하였으며, 실험처치는 총 8주 동안 유치원 매일의 일과 중 자유선택활동시간에 이루어졌다. 사전․사후검사 후 수집된 자료는 SPSS프로그램을 이용하여 t-검증으로 분석하였다. 연구결과, 유아의 수학적 문제 해결력 검사에서 실험집단의 점수가 비교집단에 비해 높게 나타났다. 구체적인 결과는 수학적 문제해결력의 하위영역인 분류, 패턴, 수, 측정에서 실험집단과 비교집단 간 통계적으로 의미 있는 차이를 보였으며, 수학에 대한 태도검사에서도 실험집단의 점수가 비교집단에 비해 높게 나타났다. 따라서 유아의 수학적 문제해결력 및 태도 향상을 위해 유아교육 현장에서 탐구중심 수․조작영역 활동을 적용해 볼 수 있을 것으로 판단된다.
