This research aims to empirically test Kang’s two faces theory. In order to accomplish this purpose, this study focuses on the impact of intimacy and social dependence that is the most important construct in the theory on the relationship between two faces that are self face (speaker’s face) and other face (hearer’s face). Based on two faces theory, two face hypotheses are proposed. The first one is that face messages enhancing speaker’s will be interpreted as face messages more enhancing hearer’s face by hearers in order of cooperative, neutral, and competitive social dependence. The second one is that face messages enhancing speaker’s face will be interpreted as face messages more enhancing hearer’s face to intimate hearers than nonintiamte hearers. According to statistical analyses, the first one was partially accepted. There was no signifcant difference in hearer’s face between cooperative and neutral social dependence, but the significant difference in hearer’s face between cooperative/neutral social dependence and competitive social dependence was found. The intimacy hypothesis was rejected. The overall results of this study tended to support two faces theory. Further, this study discussed various implications in the perspectives of two faces theory, research methodologies, and future research.

본문의 목적은 강길호의 양자체면이론을 실증적으로 검증하려는 것이다. 이러한 연구 목적을 이루기 위해, 특히 양자체면이론의 가장 핵심적인 개념인 상호의존성 요인과 친밀성 요인이 양자체면의 관계에 미치는 효과를 조사하고 있다. 양자체면이론의 논리에 근거하여 협동적 상호의존성, 중립적 상호의존성 그리고 경쟁적 상호의존성의 순으로 말하는 사람의 자아체면을 올리는 메시지는 듣는 사람에 의해 듣는 사람의 타자체면을 낮추는 으로 해석될 것이라는 상호의존성 가설과 친할수록 자아체면을 올리는 메시지는 타자체면을 올리는 것으로 해석될 것이라는 친밀성 가설이 설정되었다. 이 가설들을 검증하기 위하여 실험연구방법을 사용하여 경험적 자료가 수집되었다. 수집된 자료를 통계 분석한 결과, 상호
의존성 가설은 타자체면의 해석에서 협동적 상호의존성과 중립적 상호의존성은 차이가 없었으나 이들 조건과 경쟁적 상호의존성은 차이가 있는 것으로 밝혀져 부분적으로 검증되었다. 그러나 친밀성 가설은 기각된 것으로 나타났다. 양자체면이론의 핵심이 협동적 상호의존성과 경쟁적 상호의존성 간의 차이라는 점에서 본 연구는 전반적으로 양자체면이론을 지지하고 있다고 할 수 있다. 그러나 중립적 상호의존성 조건과 친밀성 요인에 대해선 여전히 보완적 연구가 필요하다고 할 수 있다. 본 연구는 이와 같은 연구 결과에 대해 양자체면이론의 관점에서 그리고 학술적 관점에서 심도 있는 논의를 하고 있다.
