The goals of this study are to compare rhythmic characteristics of stripes used in Korean and Japanese traditional clothes (i.e. the hanbok and kimono), to identify similarities and differences in the rhythmic characteristics, and to establish the unique identity of traditional Korean clothes based on the results of this study. For the hanbok, stripes were mainly used in the sleeves of the saikdong jeogori for women, but for the kimono, western style stripes were used for entire outfits for both men and women. The stripes of both Korea and Japan consist of straight lines with vertical or horizontal direction. However, the stripes of the saikdong have a jaunty and rhythmical image because the short straight lines are used in the sleeves. The stripes in kimonos consist of vertical lines on the entire fabric so that changing rhythmical and elegant images are expressed. In terms of color, the traditional obansaek with vivid tones is utilized only for the wonsam and hwalot, but pale, light, and bright tones are widely used for the saikdong. For striped kimonos, colors with dark or middle tone have continuously been used and express the image of dignity and simplicity. Most stripes of the saikdong are classified as temporal rhythm, but all kimono stripes are temporal rhythm. Free rhythm is a dominant rhythm pattern for traditional saikdong stripes. The traditional saikdong expresses a free rhythm with a balanced pace and colorful tones, but the modern saikdong has a free rhythm with more bright and jaunty images with irregular paces and pale, light, and bright tones. The kimono's traditional stripes have their own symbolic image patterned by simply repeating the traditional regular repetition rhythm. Simple repetition rhythms with two beats especially express an image of simplicity using a moderate pace and contrast.

이 연구는 한국 복식문화의 대표적 상징인 색동과 일본의 민속의상 속 스트라이프를 대상으로 만물을 체계화시키는 리듬특성을 비교분석하여 그 유사성과 차별성을 도출하고 이를 통해 한국문화의 정체성을 확립하고자 하였다. 한국의 경우 스트라이프가 활용된 범위는 주로 여성용 색동저고리의 소매에 사용되었고, 일본의 경우 서구적 형식의 스트라이프가 남녀 기모노 한 벌 전체에 사용되었다. 스트라이프를 구성하는 선은 한국과 일본 모두 수직방향의 직선이 착장 시 가로방향으로 전이되는 특성을 보였다. 그러나 한국은 수직선이 소매에 국한되어 짧은 길이로 사용되었기 때문에 경쾌한 이미지를, 일본은 수직선이 의상 전체에 길게 사용되어 부드럽고 우아한 이미지를 연출하였다. 색채의 경우 한국은 원삼과 활옷 같은 예복에만 전통 오방색을 vivid하게 활용하였을 뿐 대부분 밝고 가벼운 색조의 활용도가 가장 높았다. 일본은 전통적 선호색인 어두운 색조와 중간 색조의 색채가 스트라이프 기모노에도 지속적으로 사용되어 엄숙하고 수수한 이미지를 표현하였고 한국과 유사하게 화려한 색조의 활용은 미미하였다. 스트라이프 리듬의 시공간 유형은 한국은 대부분 시간의 리듬으로 아주 미미하게 공간적 리듬도 나타났으나 일본은 모두 시간의 리듬이었다. 한국의 리듬패턴은 자유리듬이 가장 두드러지게 나타났다. 전통 색동은 빠르지도 느리지도 않는 안정적인 속도로 화려하게 진행되는 자유리듬이었지만 현대의 색동은 전통적인 자유리듬에 현대적 감성을 적극 반영하여 밝고 가벼운 색조를 불규칙적인 속도로 사용하여 더 밝고 경쾌한 이미지를 표현하는 자유리듬이었다. 반면 일본은 전통적인 규칙반복리듬을 단순 반복하는 패턴으로 그들만의 상징적 이미지를 형성하고 있었고 특히 2박자의 단순반복리듬은 중간정도의 빠르기와 대비로 수수한 이미지를 연출하였다.
