In 21st Century, so called ‘Era of Science of Mind’, the ‘Mind’ has used to be focused on. Cognitive Science is now playing a key role in exploring ‘Mind’ itself. Since the ‘Cognitive Revolution’ in 1950’s, cognitive scientists have been continually interested in Art and reanalyzed artworks by means of cognitive scientific methodologies. But until now, those studies can only give us very limited explanations about Art and Mind. Recently, getting more attentions in the discipline of Cognitive Science, Neuroscience is often applied to research on analyses of cognitive processes while people create and appreciate art. In this paper, first of all, I will review the production of research in the field of Cognitive Science related with Visual Art, and consider not only its fundamental problems but also the future issues. I will introduce studies of Cognitive Science about visual stimulus to the eyes, brain’s interpretation of sensual experiences, organic relationships between perceptual experiences by eyes and the interpretation by brain. As for examples of studies about Cognitive Science and visual arts, we will examine ‘Neuroaesthetics’ by Semir Zeki, ‘theory of aesthetic form’ by Jennifer MacMahon and so on. Through these studies of this paper, I will perform researches of the future issues about Mind and Art as well as the review about existing convergent studies of Cognitive Science and Visual Arts.

21세기 ‘마음의 과학’ 시대의 도래와 함께 ‘마음’에 대한 연구가 주목을 받고 있다. 인지과학을 중심으로 여 러 학문 분야가 융합하여 마음의 실체를 밝히고자 노력하고 있다. 예술을 인지 과학적 입장에서 재해석하 려는 시도는 1950년대 소위 ‘인지혁명’ 이래 인지과학 분야에서 최근까지 지속적으로 이루어지고 있지만, 아직까지 그 성과는 매우 제한적인 상황이다. 예술작품을 창작하거나 또는 감상하는 인간의 인지과정을 분석하는데 있어, 인지과학 내에서 주목받고 있는 신경과학적 연구방법을 적용해보는 시도들이 최근 이루 어지고 있다. 본 논문은 인지과학의 태동과 발전 과정 및 예술과의 관련성에 대해 기존 연구내용을 살펴 보고, 그 근본적 문제점과 한계, 그리고 가능성과 향후 과제 등을 검토한다. 먼저, 눈에 주어지는 시각자 극, 두뇌에 의한 감각경험의 해석, 눈과 두뇌에 의한 시각경험과 해석 사이의 유기적 관계를 설명한 인지 과학의 연구 사례를 소개한다. 인지과학과 예술과 관련된 연구 사례로는 세미어 제키의 신경미학, 제니퍼 맥마흔의 미학적 형식이론 등을 살펴볼 것이다. 이를 통해 인지과학과 예술 융합의 의의를 논한 연구결과 들과 향후 미래 과제들에 대해 검토해 볼 것이다.
