Formalist criticism has played a relatively peripheral role in Yeats criticism. Given general agreement that Yeats's reputation as a poet of the highest order has its basis in his technical prowess, this is somewhat surprising. Pioneering work by Helen Vendler has, however, recently started to fill this critical lacuna. This essay addresses Vendler's identification of a speciific lyrical subgenre in Yeats, which consists of both sonnets and other poems more loosely affiliated with the sonnet. It demonstrates how several poems within this subgenre bring about a conflation between the "turn" or concluding couplet of the sonnet form, on the one hand, and a sudden intrusion of animalistic energy on the other. This observation is used to question the distinctive identity of the subgenre, and - in conclusion - also point towards challenges in the identification and delimitation of generic groups.
