The purpose of this study is to support the existence of character traits in virtue ethics on the basis of ‘VIA Character Strengths and Virtues(CSV)’ in positive psychology. Situationists insist that a virtuous behavior is not caused by character traits but caused by situations, and they deny the existence of character traits or admit it very restrictively. Positive psychology is the study of the human positive aspects such as happiness, well- being, self fulfillment and good character. It is an important task in positive psychology to search for the positive traits contributing to happiness and well-being. The CSV is the classification of the universal and objective positive traits produced by massive empirical researches and investigations. The CSV is comprised of six Virtues and 24 Character Strengths affiliated with the 6 Virtues. The six virtues are wisdom(knowledge), courage, humanity, justice, temperance, and transcendence. The CSV is composed of the definition, theory, measure, development, cultivation and much more of every 24 Strengths. One of the selection criteria of Strengths is a ‘traitlike’, which is manifesting the individual’s behavior that can be assessed and having generality across situations as well as stability across time. By this criterion, the CSV examined every 24 Strengths and showed the result as follows: the 15 Strengths (perspective, love, forgiveness, etc) satisfy the criterion and the 8 Strengths (integrity, kindness, fairness, etc) somewhat satisfy it. But the only ‘bravery’ do not satisfy it. Therefore, it can be said that the 23 positive traits of all the 24 in the CSV exist as character traits.

이 연구의 목적은 덕윤리의 인격 특질의 실재성을 긍정심리학의 ‘성격 강점(character strength)’ 연구에 근거하여 옹호하는 것이다. 덕이란 바람직한 인격 특질이므로 인격 특질이 실재하지 않는다면 덕윤리는 성립되지 않는다. 상황주의는 인격 특질의 실재성에 대하여 강한 의심을 하고 있다. 상황주의자들은 유덕한 행위는 개인의 인격 특질에 기인하는 것이 아니라 주어진 조건과 상황에 기인하므로 인격 특질이란 것은 없거나 매우 제한적으로 존재한다고 한다. 긍정심리학의 연구 성과 중 하나인 ‘VIA 성격강점과 덕목의 분류체계(CSV)’는 방대한 경험과학적인 연구를 통해 시대와 지역을 넘어 인간을 행복하고 풍요롭게 하는 보편적인 인격 특질이 무엇인지를 밝혀내고자하였다. CSV는 긍정적 특질, 즉 덕을 6개의 상위 덕목아래 하위 덕목인 24개의 강점으로 분류하였으며, 24개 각 강점에 대하여 정의, 관련 이론, 측정 방법 및 결과, 발달 및 계획적 개입 등에 관한 상세한 설명으로 구성되어있다. CSV는 성격 강점을 선정하는 준거 중 하나로 ‘특질적이어야 한다’는 것을 제시하고 있는 데, 이는 시간에 대한 안정성, 상황에 대한 일관성을 갖춘 측정 가능한 개인차를 나타내야한다는 것이다. CSV는 이 준거에 비추어 24개 각 강점을 평가하였다. 그 결과 즉 긍정적 특질 중에서 지혜, 사랑, 자제, 용서, 감사 등 15개는 이 준거를 충족시키며, 정직, 친철, 공정성 등 8개는 이를 어느 정도 충족시킨다. 하지만 유일하게 ‘용기’는 이 준거를 충족시키지 못하거나 알 수 없다고 한다. 따라서 CSV가 총정리한 24개 덕 중에서 23개는 인격 특질로서 존재한다고 할 수 있다.
