This essay is based on recent issue in area of colonial Korea studies – ‘colonial publicness’. It focuses on social service of Japanese Buddhist sect in colonial Korea. Especially investigating ‘colonial publicness’ discovered and confirmed in Korean movements by providing as a case study KōzyōKaikan‐ social project put into practice by Shinshū Ōtaniha. In this essay, ‘colonial publicness’ considered through movements of Koreans in KōzyōKaikan is summarized as follows. KōzyōKaikan, created by Shinshū Ōtaniha by purpose as part of colonial hegemony structure, was carrying out various services for Koreans. Korean students have started being aware of colonial system issues, to express which we need to seek for ‘value of community’. For Koreans this value appears as ‘public property’, which cause existence of idea of ‘government property’. It is coming across to colonial nation political power. Appearing from this process ‘colonial publicness’ is not stratified or unsettled, it shows differed aspects of resistance and cooperation with colonial authorities. However, it is ‘colonial publicness’ seen from colonized nation point of view. In this case, the others (colonial authorities) must become intermediary. In this paper, I present study under ‘colonial publicness’ from Korean point of view. In future, I want to investigate this issue from colonized side (Korea)and colonial ruling side (Japanese Buddhism) point of view. Comparing circumstances of both sides can give better understanding of ‘colonial publicness’.
