“The Wandering Jew” was published in the magazine Sincho in 1917. This short story is one of Akutagwa Ryunosuke`s Christian works. This work is written base on the “The Wandering Jew” of Europe. Akutagwa describes Joseph, who make a fool of Jesus carrying a cross on his back toward the hill of Golgotha. That is to say、Akutagwa describes Joseph as the main character、who must wander until the day of doom comes. He also describes Joseph`s peace and redemption from recognizing and regretting about his guilt concerning making a fool of Jesus. What Akutagwa says about Joseph`s regret is in the form of the Narrator`s solution to a question posed. There is no need to discuss whether it is right or wrong.Joseph`s peace and redemption are the author Akutagwa`s thought. The theme of this work expresses the humanism of Akutagwa Ryunosuke.

本作品は大正六年の󰡔新潮󰡕に発表された、芥川の所謂キリシタン物に属する作品である。この作品はヨーロッパの国に伝わっている󰡔さまよえる猶太人󰡕の伝説に材を仰いでいる。十字架を背負ってゴルゴダの丘に向かうイエスを嘲弄して、イエスから＜行けと云うなら、行かぬでもないが、その代り、その方はわしの帰るまで、待って居れよ＞という詛いを受けたヨセフを借りて、作品を展開しているのである。すなわち、最後の審判の日が来るまで、さ迷わなければならない運命を背負ったヨセフを主人公にして、イエスを嘲弄した自分の罪を認識し、自省を促した者のみが感じる安らぎと救いを描いている。芥川は作品の結びのヨセフの自省について、＜自分の最後の第二の疑問に答えている。この答の当否を穿鑿する必要は、暫くない＞と記している。これはそのまま、ヨセフの自省に作者芥川の思想が投影しているということである。芥川は真相を知らなく、自分勝手に論う傍観者の中で、自分の行為を自省し充実して生きる人生に重きを置いているのである。
