The purpose of this study was to answer the question "What is the practical arts education?", “What is the viewpoint of practical arts education about the real world?" and to conceptualize of 'practical' in the practical arts subject in elementary school. To achieve the goal, this study researched the literatures on the etymology and the lexical meaning, the curriculum, the educational history and philosophy, so the concept of 'practical' was derived from it. Such conceptualizations derived from the documentary research was reexamined and supplemented by the propriety test from educational professionals in the field of practical arts education. The results of this study were as follows: First, the lexical and etymological concepts of 'practical' were actual(real), substantial and practical. Second, concepts of 'practical' in the curriculum were real life, practical use and needs, practice, production, and work. Third, concepts of 'practical' in the educational history and philosophy were needs and life, interest and activeness, work, integration. Fourth, comprehensive concepts of 'practical' were practical and practice, real life and needs, interest and activeness for work, real(practical) production by work, practical integration. Fifth, by conceptualizing the 'practical', practical arts education featured the integrated subject of work and practical subject based on real life. Sixth, the goals of practical arts education by conceptualization of 'practical' were to be the human being who is practical, integrated, and active. Seventh, the contents of practical arts education by conceptualization of 'practical' consist of the integrated experience of work based on interest. Practical arts education is see the real world through practical and practice, real life and needs, interest and activeness for work, real(practical) production by work, practical integration. The results of this study is derived from the limited literatures, therefore to answer the question, "What is the practical arts education?", it is necessary to approach to the following study with different points of views and a variety of data.

이 연구의 목적은 ‘실과란 무엇인가’, ‘실과는 세상을 어떻게 바라보는가’에 대한 물음에 답하기 위한 기초 연구로서 초등학교 ‘실과’라는 교과 명칭에 포함된 ‘실(實)’의 개념을 관련문헌을 중심으로 고찰하는 데 있었다. 연구의 목적을 달성하기 위하여 어원․어의, 교육과정, 교육사․교육철학의 세 갈래로 나누어 문헌에 나타난 실의 개념을 도출하는 방법을 사용하였다. 우선, 영역별 관련 문헌을 고찰하여 실과의 실 개념을 도출하고 종합하였다. 다음으로 종합한 실 개념을 통해 실과 교육의 성격, 목표, 내용을 살펴보았다. 실과 교육 전문가 집단의 타당도 평가를 거쳐 수정․보완한 내용은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 어원․어의 관련 문헌을 통해 도출된 실의 개념은 실제, 실질, practical이었다. 둘째, 교육과정 관련 문헌을 통해 도출된 실의 개념은 실생활, 실용과 필요, 실천, 생산, 일이었다. 셋째, 교육사․교육철학 관련 문헌을 통해 도출된 실의 개념은 필요와 생활, 흥미와 능동, 노작, 통합이었다. 넷째, 종합한 실의 개념은 실제와 실천, 실생활과 필요, 일에 대한 흥미와 능동, 노작을 통한 실질적 생산, 실제적 통합이었다. 다섯째, 실의 개념을 통해 본 실과교육의 성격은 삶의 실제에 터한 실천교과, 통합적 노작교과였다. 여섯째, 실의 개념을 통해 본 실과 교육의 목표는 실천적 생활인, 전인적 인간, 능동적 소양인이었다. 일곱째, 실의 개념을 통해 본 실과 교육의 내용은 흥미에 기반을 둔 통합적 노작경험이 가능한 내용이었다.
