This study developed a conceptual model of antecedents to the choice of two types of organizational control system - bureaucratic and cultural control system in the multinational context. Although a number of studies have examined the nature and roles of the two types of organizational control system, no prior organizational research has systematically investigated the antecedent factors for the choice of those two types of organizational control system. To bridge such a gap in previous research on organizational control system, this study developed a contingency theoretical model demonstrating the determinants of the use of bureaucratic and cultural control systems in the multinational context. Incorporating a cross-cultural perspective as well as the traditional contingency theoretical view into the model, this study intends to advance our understanding of organizational control system in the multinational context by demonstrating the profile of organizational, environmental, and cultural factors affecting the choice of the two types of organizational control system.

본 논문에서는 다국적 상황에서 두 가지 형태의 조직통제시스템 - 관료주의적 통제시스템과 문화적 통제시스템 선택의 선행 요인에 대한 이론적 모형을 개발하였다. 비록 조직이론에 관한 이전의 많은 연구논문들이 이 두 가지 형태의 조직 통제시스템의 본질과 역할들을 조사해왔지만, 그 두 가지 형태의 조직 통제시스템의 선택에 대한 선행 요인들을 체계적으로 조사한 연구논문은 현재까지 없는 것으로 보인다. 조직통제시스템에 관한 기존 연구의 이와 같은 결함(gap)을 메우기 위하여, 본 논문에서는 다국적 상황에서 관료주의적 통제시스템과 문화적 통제시스템의 선택을 결정하는 요인들을 나타내는 상황 이론적 모형을 제안하였다. 전통적인 상황 이론적 관점뿐만 아니라 이(異)문화 관점을 제안된 모델에 포함하여, 본 논문에서는 그 두 가지의 조직 통제시스템의 선택에 영향을 미치는 조직적, 환경적, 그리고 문화적 요인들의 단면도를 나타냄으로써 다국적 상황에서의 조직 통제시스템에 대한 이해를 증대시키고자 한다.
