The bio-industry is characterized as the knowledge-intensive and high value-added industry, and the solution for health, food, environment and energy which will be main problems for human beings in the near future. This industry's potential is huge, but still in the early stage on the way to industrialization. While the U.S., Europe and Japan are the key players in the world market, the Korea's bio-industry is far behind these developed countries and about 3 billion US dollars in size. Thus, this study tried to analyze the policies for the bio-industry in the U.S., Europe, Japan and Korea and then introduce some suggestions for the Korea's bio-industry which would be the major industry for the next Korean economy. Based on the results of the comparative analysis, the paper suggested some solutions. At first, Korea needs to develop the technology power in the bio-industry. Next there should be supply and demand markets for bio-industry companies. Thirdly, the Korea's bio-industry needs a business atmosphere in which founding as well as managing companies are favored by people. Finally, government's support should be done efficiently in this early stage of industrialization.

미래 첨단산업으로서 고부가가치산업, 지식집약산업일 뿐만 아니라 건강, 식량, 환경, 에너지 등 인류 난제해결의 실마리를 제공할 수 있어 향후 성장잠재력이 큰 바이오산업은 아직은 초기단계의 산업이다. 한국 바이오산업도 이제 겨우 걸음마 수준인 30억불 정도의 시장에 불과하며, 기술적으로도 선진국에 크게 못 미치고 있다. 따라서 본 연구는 최근 침체를 겪고 있는 한국 경제에 대한 대안으로 미국, 유럽, 일본 및 한국의 바이오산업 정책을 비교 분석한 결과를 토대로 바이오산업에 대한 현실적 발전방안을 제시하고자 한다. 이에 따라 본 논문은 한국 바이오산업 발전을 위한 정책대안으로서 우선적으로 기술력을 획기적으로 강화해야 하며, 다음으로 바이오와 관련된 수급시장이 육성되어야 하며, 창업 등 산업발전 토양이 필요하고, 정부의 지원도 보다 효율적으로 이루어져야 한다고 제시하고 있다.
