This study examines the effect of parent control and JV performance. 71 manufacturing JVs formed between Korean-US, Korean-Japanese, or Korean-European investors were sampled for the study. The more control MNE parents exercised over the activities representing their own firm-specific advantages, the better the JVs performed. However, the more control MNE parents exercised over the activities representing local Korean partners’ firm-specific advantages, the worse the JVs performed. This finding suggests that the expertise or know-how needed to control or manage one partner's firm-specific advantages is different from that needed to control the other partner's firm-specific advantages. Therefore, the division of management control between JV partners should be made so that both partners exercise dominant control over their own firm-specific advantages within the JV.

본 연구는 모기업의 경영통제가 합작자회사의 경영성과에 미치는 영향을 조사하였습니다. 표본으로는 한국-일본, 한국-미국 또는 한국-유럽기업 간에 세워진 71의 제조 합작기업을 선정했습니다. 외국 측 모기업이 자신이 제공한 기업특유의 우위(firm-specific advantages)와 관련된 경영활동의 통제(parent control)를 강화할 때, 합작자회사의 경영성과는 향상되는 것으로 나타났습니다. 하지만, 외국 측 모기업이 한국 합작파트너의 기업특유의 우위(firm-specific advantages)와 관련된 경영활동의 통제(parent control)를 강화할 때, 합작자회사의 경영성과는 악화되는 것으로 나타났습니다. 이는 곧 한국과 외국의 합작파트너가 제공하는 기업특유의 우위(firm-specific advantages)를 통제하고 관리하는데 요구되는 경영노하우가 서로 다름을 의미합니다. 따라서 합작파트너 자신이 제공한 기업특유의 우위(firm-specific advantages)를 각자 자신이 통제관리하도록 경영의 역할 분담이 이루어져야 함을 시사하고 있습니다.
