The comparison between man and woman is one of the most significant controversies of modern society. When it is discussed, St. Thomas Aquinas, who is called “the official Teacher of the Catholic Church”, is often criticized vehemently. How can we understand the conflict between the traditional respects of the Catholic Church for Thomas and the severe criticism of him by the feminists? The purpose of this article is to determine which position Thomas took on the theme of ‘Woman’, what he said exactly and what his intention was in doing so. It has been confirmed that he insisted that woman ought to be ruled by a man. This is seen in his enforcing, rather than criticizing the traditional claims that the birth of woman was the result of a kind of mistake in nature and remains in a passive role in the procreation process and has weaker reasoning powers. Built on those presuppositions, he prescribes against preaching and teaching for women and advocates the reservation of the sacrament of the priesthood for men. But in Aquinas’s works, one can find not only these devaluations of woman in relation to man, but also the innovative and positive elements of women, which transcends the limitations of his period. For example, Aquinas emphasizes that woman too was created in the “Image of God” and denies the active role of Eve in the transmission of original sin. He concludes that the body and sex are positive. He proposes the practical, by which mankind comes to the Equality between man and woman. He also recognizes that woman’s nature would in no way be limited in relation to the theological virtues of faith, hope and charity. In respect to the feminist issue, Aquinas was not perfectly free of prejudice because he was misled by traditional opinions. Nonetheless, because he had heard the voice of Good News from the Bible, he could insist on the followings, even against the spirits of his own time: “It is good that women exist in the world and that men can make a union with them, from the sexual relationship to the spiritual meeting which leads up to the highest friendship.” This statement, made by Aquinas in spite of the limitations of the Middle Ages, calls upon modern men to be more broadminded.

현대 사회에서 가장 중요한 문제로 등장하고 있는 남녀의 협력 관계가 논의될 때면 종종, 가톨릭교회의 공식적인 스승이라고 불릴 만한 토마스 아퀴나스가 집중적인 공격의 대상이 되었다. 토마스에 대한 가톨릭교회의 전통적인 존경과 여성계로부터 쏟아지는 신랄한 비판 사이에 느껴지는 긴장을 어떻게 받아들여야 할까? 본 연구에서는 토마스가 여성이라는 주제에 대해서 실제로 어떤 입장을 취했는가, 즉 과연 정확히 무슨 말을 했고 그 의도는 무엇이었는가를 탐구했다. 우리는 실제로 토마스가 여성의 우연하고 불완전한 탄생, 출산에서의 수동성, 이성 능력의 취약성이라는 전통으로부터 내려온 전제에 뿌리를 두고 남성과 여성의 지배󰠀복종 관계를 주장하며, 여성의 설교 및 가르치는 것 금지, 성품성사 수여 불가 등에 도달했다는 사실을 확인했다. 그러나 그의 작품 안에는 단순히 여성 폄하적인 주장들뿐만 아니라 시대를 뛰어넘는 개혁적인 측면들과 긍정적인 요소들도 충분히 나타난다는 사실을 확인할 수 있었다. 예를 들어 토마스는 여성들도 신의 모상으로 창조되었다는 점을 강조했고, 원죄를 하와에게 돌리는 것을 부정했으며, 육체와 성을 긍정적으로 판단했다. 이를 토대로 여성과 남성의 공동체가 추구하는 평등에 도달하기 위한 실천적인 제안들을 제시하고, 특히 믿음, 소망, 사랑이라는 신학적인 덕과 관련해서는 여성의 본성에 아무런 제한이 없다는 사실을 인정했다. 여성 문제라는 측면에서 토마스는 사실상 시대적 제약 때문에 전통으로부터 내려온 입장을 수용한 자신의 선입견으로부터 완전히 벗어날 수 없었다. 그럼에도 그는 성서에서 들려오는 복음의 소리를 들었기 때문에 당대의 시대정신을 거슬러서 적어도 다음과 같이 주장할 수 있었다. “여자가 존재한다는 사실은 좋은 것이다. 남자들이 그들과 결합할 수 있는 것, 육체적인 결합부터 최고의 우정 단계에 이르는 정신적인 만남에 이르기까지 하나가 될 수 있는 것은 좋은 것이다.” 토마스가 중세라는 제약 속에서도 이런 목소리를 냈다는 사실은 현대인들에게 더욱 열린 마음을 가지도록 요청하고 있다.
