The purpose of this thesis is to comprehend the confucius political theory demonstrated in the Analects of Confucius in the perspective of social ethics. Social ethics is a moral philosophy which seeks the ideal social formation and moral value or it studies the basic principles of social system organizations. At the same time, this is a social philosophy and a political philosophy. Therefore this paper inspects Confucius's ideal community and its structural meaning in a society through his political ideology and it also investigated the rule of right and rule of might as a political measure to achieve such political ideology. Also it considers the Confucius idea of soverign and courtiers role and attitude by looking at the concept of role as it is the responsible agent of a society. The conventional understanding of Confucius political theory is that he only asserted the moral politic practiced by ethics & politics of Dangwei(當爲; righteousness). However, Confucius approved not only ethics & politics of Dangwei(當爲; righteousness) but ethics & politics of Youwei(有爲; utility) and he dreamed about ethics & politics of Wuwei(無爲: inactivity) which goes beyond the ultimate value. Although it is true that his political activity was focused on the materialization of moral politic that is based on ethics & politics of Dangwei(當爲). Nevertheless he failed to achieve the materialization of moral politic and later he realized that asking for the ethics of righteousness was an impossible goal. He was also deeply concerned about politics of Youwei(有爲; utility) which weighs too much emphasis on the pragmatism and utilitarianism as he considers these two ideologies can lead all human beings into a blind existence or a slave for materials. If so, is there a third way out? There is no way but utopia is the only way to accomplish ethics & politics of Wuwei(無爲: inactivity)?

이 글은 『論語』속에 나타난 공자의 정치론을 사회윤리학적 관점에서 읽어본 것이다. 사회윤리학이란 이상사회의 이념과 그 이념적 가치를 구현할 수 있는 사회구성 혹은 사회제도 조직의 기본적 원리를 탐구하는 도덕철학이며, 또한 사회철학이고 정치철학이다. 따라서 이 글에서는 공자의 안인의 정치이념을 통하여 그가 추구하고자 했던 이상사회의 공동체상과 그 사회구조적 함의를 돌아보았고, 그러한 정치이념을 달성하는 정책적 수단으로 패도와 왕도의 정치론을 돌아보았다. 그리고 사회윤리적 책임주체인 역할개념을 통하여 공자가 생각하는 군주와 신하의 정치적 역할과 태도를 고찰하였다. 공자의 정치론에 대한 기존의 이해는 내성외왕의 도덕정치만을 주장했다는 것이었다. 그러나 공자는 왕도적 도덕정치만이 아니라 패도적 기술정치도 용인했고, 궁극적 이상으로서 무위이치의 꿈도 간직했었다. 물론 그가 생애동안 분투했던 정치활동은 왕도적 도덕정치의 구현에 있었던 것이 사실이다. 그러나 그는 결국 그것의 실현에 실패했고, 도덕적 당위에 호소하는 정치조차도 너무나 높은 이상임을 직감했다. 실용과 공리만을 중시하는 패도정치에 대해서도 우려했다. 자칫 그것은 인간을 맹목적 존재로 추락시키고 물신의 노예로 이끌 수가 있다고 보았기 때문이 아닌가 한다. 그렇다면 제3의 길은 없을까? 무위이치의 길은 영원한 유토피아일 뿐인가?
