The number of foreign students coming to South Korea to study has been increasing exponentially in recent years. There are a few reasons why. First, the South Korea government, unhappy with the imbalance between the number of outgoing Korean students and that of incoming foreign students, initiated an aggressive foreign student recruitment plan, titled ‘Study Korea Project’ in 2005. Also the Korean wave, an intensifying global interest in South Korean cultural products, redefined the image of the country. In addition, the global presence of Korean companies has emphasized South Korea is a country to learn from for the young people from underdeveloped countries. However, the higher education system in South Korea is not quite ready to take in a dramatic influx of foreign students. Many universities, surprised by the large number of international students, are modifying administrative systems in order to meet with their needs. Unfortunately, they are barely keeping up with the increasing need. It is also a problem that a significant portion of foreign students come to South Korea with inadequate Korean skills and poor cultural orientation. In addition, the atmosphere of many universities in South Korea may not be welcoming for foreign students. Many Koreans, lecturers as well as students, have a limited cultural experience with foreigners. Therefore they sometimes make foreign students uncomfortable due to their lack of cultural sensitivities. Luckily, some institutions take innovative approaches in educating foreign students in South Korea and have started to generate remarkable outcome. Courses only open to foreign students relieve huge academic pressure by having them avoid competing with Korean students for grades. Some courses, providing cultural understanding of the South Korean society, are open in several universities and are evaluated highly by international students. Some institutions, by having Korean students mentoring international students, promote cultural understanding between the two parties. In this article, the reasons of rapid internationalization of Korean universities and the obstacles foreign students are experiencing in Korean educational environment are overviewed. Also what efforts Korean universities put into in order to maximize educational experience of foreign students in Korea are explained with examples.

최근 한국 대학으로 유학을 오는 외국인들이 기하급수적으로 증가하고 있다. 교육수지 불균형을 개선하기 위해 정부에서 추진한 Study Korea Project의 영향과 아시아뿐만 아니라 세계적으로 불고 있는 한류의 바람 그리고 경쟁력 있는 한국 기업들의 세계적 명성 확보로 한국이 매력적이고 배울 점이 많은 국가로 인식되기 시작했기 때문이다. 그렇지만 빠르게 증가하고 있는 외국인 유학생들을 한국의 고등교육 환경에서 여러 어려움을 겪는다. 우선 현지 문화적응을 위해 가장 중요한 한국어 능력이 부족한 유학생들이 있고 한국 대학들도 순발력 있게 제도적 보완을 하지 못하고 있는 점도 있다. 그리고 대학생활을 하면서 만나는 일부 한국인 학생들이나 교수자들이 제한된 국제화 경험으로 인해 문화적 감수성 없이 외국인 유학생들을 대하는 경우도 있기 때문이다. 다행히 여러 한국 대학들이 제도적 개선 및 외국인 유학생만을 위한 맞춤형 교육과정을 개발하고 운영하고 있으며 한국 학생들도 외국인 유학생들이 한국문화에 잘 적응하고 이상적인 한국 유학경험을 가질 수 있도록 돕기 위한 자생적 활동을 전개하고 있다. 이 글을 통해 한국 대학들이 빠른 속도로 국제화 되고 있는 배경을 살펴보고 한국에서 공부하는 유학생들이 어떤 어려움을 느끼는지 진단하고자 하였다. 아울러 한국의 대학들이 외국인 유학생들을 효과적으로 교육시키기 위해 어떤 노력을 기울이고 있으며 한국 학생들은 또한 외국인 유학생들을 위해 어떤 시도를 하고 있는지 살펴보았다. 더 나아가 늘어나는 외국인 학생들을 통해 한국인 학생들도 함께 어울리며 캠퍼스 내 국제화를 경험할 수 있는 기회나 교육 프로그램이 있는지도 살펴보았다.
