When it comes to identity development, many college students has critical developmental task, and critical reflection is one of imperative activities for constructing and adjusting identity. Journal writing has emerged as an useful instruction method that allows students to reflect oneself as well as one's environment. This study aims to analyze the effects of journal writings about "who am I?" on enhancing reflection. For this purpose, a qualitative research design is adopted. Journals that had been produced by an students' self-directed activities in a college lecture were analyzed. And In-depth interviews with college students who have written journals were conducted. The findings shows three important themes. First, Journal writings helped college students to focus on authentic identity rather than socially constructed identity, Second, the participants were also found that they attempted to see themselves as they are rather than attempting distorting their selves. Third, this study findings address that reflection on oneself becomes gradually a daily, common practice as a result of journal writing activities.

오늘날의 교육 및 취업 현실을 고려할 때 대학생 시기는 자아정체감 형성에 있어 매우 중요한 시기이다. 자아정체감의 확립을 위해서는 무엇보다도 자신에 대한 깊은 성찰이 필요한데, 자신에 대한 반성적 사고를 지속적으로 촉진하고 성찰 내용을 체계적으로 정리하여 더욱 깊이 있는 성찰로의 기반을 마련해주는 도구로서 저널쓰기가 매우 유용하게 활용될 수 있다. 이에 본 연구에서는 대학생이 ‘나는 누구인가’에 대해 성찰하는 과정에서 작성한 저널 분석을 통해 그들의 자아정체감 형성 경험을 이해하고자 하였다. 연구 결과 첫째, 대학생들은 저널쓰기를 통한 자아성찰을 통해 사회에서 보여지는 나의 모습보다 독립적 자아로서 ‘나’ 본연의 가치에 집중하게 됨을 확인할 수 있었다. 둘째, 자기회피 혹은 자기관대의 경향이 저널쓰기를 통한 자아성찰 과정에서 있는 그대로의 ‘나’를 직시하는 엄격한 자기반성을 하는 모습으로 변모함을 발견하게 되었다. 셋째, 저널쓰기를 통한 자아성찰을 통해 형식적이고 개념적이었던 자기성찰이 점차적으로 일상화되고 내재화됨을 발견할 수 있었다.
