무역보험은 다른 분야와는 달리 정책적 함축성을 지닌 특수한 분야로서 우리나라 경제성장에 견인차 역할을 하는 분야로 평가되고 있다. WTO 출범이후 수출보험에 대한 규제여부에 대한 판단이 아직 확정되지 못한상황에서 향후 우리나라 무역 보험에 대한 기능적 요소에 대한 이론적 분석틀에 대한 연구가 활발히 진행되어야 할 것으로 보인다. 이러한 변화속에서 신제도주의경제학의 범주 안에 포함되고 있는 Williamson(1986)의 거래비용 이론은 새롭게 변화하고 있는 무역보험의 경제적 기능과 역할에 대한 다양한 분석이 적용될 수있을 것으로 판단된다. 거래비용 이론을 통해 살펴본 우리나라 무역보험의 적용분야는 정책보험이라는 특수한 성격을 지니고 있지만 기본적으로 계약관계에 의해 이루어지는 현상으로서 거래비용 이론이 제안하고 있는 이론적근거 틀에 적합하다는 판단을 하였다.
