Purpose: This study aims at exploring care workers' experiences in regard with family members of the elderly in nursing homes. Methods: In its methods a total of 10 care workers working in 3 nursing homes were selected and deeply interviewed and data were collected and analyzed in a phenomenological way. Results: Resulting data were categorized into 4 items: ‘evaluation on family members of the elderly', ‘their caring attitude toward the elderly', 'aspects of relationships between those family members and care workers', and ‘coping methods for those family members of the elderly'. Care workers showed negative feeling toward families neglectful of and not providing care to the elderly. But they also exposed discomfort for families' active participation in caring. 'Lack of skills and knowledge', 'feeling of discomfort-being watched and sense of not winning families' trust', 'increasing work load' were causes for discomfort. As for the third category, that is the relationship between care worker and family members: they seemed to maintain friendly relations but aspects of conflict between them were also shown. The cause of conflict was brought about usually due to problematic family with poor familial function and family full of complaints and demands. For the coping methods, some tried to treat families nicely but many of them used passive measures avoiding and even not paying attention to families. Conclusion: Care workers were undergoing difficulty with relationships with families. Further efforts should be exerted to reduce the difficulty.

목적 : 노인요양시설의 요양보호사들이 가족과 대면하면서 겪는 경험을 탐색하기 위한 연구이 다. 방법 : 3개의 시설에 근무하는 10명의 요양보호사를 심층 면담 하여 자료를 수집하였고 현상학 적 방법으로 분석하였다. 결과 : 도출된 범주는 입소노인 가족에 대한 평가, 가족돌봄에 대한 태 도, 요양보호사와 가족 간의 관계 양상, 가족에 대한 대처의 4가지 범주였다. 연구결과 요양보호사 들은 입소노인을 방치하는 가족을 부정적으로 생각하였다. 그러나 모순되게도 가족의 적극적 돌봄 행위에 대해서도 불편감을 노출하였다. 가족의 전문적 기술과 지 식부족과, 요양보호사의 불편감, 일거리가 늘어남 등이 원인이었다. 세 번째 범주는 요양보호사와 가족과의 관계로서 일부는 우호 적인 관계였으나, 갈등관계 역시 존재하였다. 특히 가족기능이 원 활하지 못한 가족, 불만과 요구가 많은 가족이 원인이었다. 마지막 범주는 요양보호사의 대처방법으 로서 요양보호사들은 가족을 이 해하는 입장을 취하면서도, 회피하고, 외면하는 소극적 행동도 취 하고 있었다. 결론 : 가족 간의 갈등 해소는 요양보호사의 소진감을 경감시킬 수 있음은 물론 가 족의 돌봄행위를 촉진시키고 입 소노인의 안녕도 향상시킬 수 있다. 요양보호사와 가족과의 갈등 을 감소시키기 위한 합리적 대안 을 모색하도록 노력해야 한다.
