There is a certain inseparable and inherent inter-connectedness between religion, esthetics and art. It is because that both religion and art are based on 'imagination' which gives new values and a big encouragement to our life and living, resulting basic changes of the spiritual and cultural aspect of human life. Seon school, especially, emphasizes the ultimate truth of life. The theory of Seon Buddhism esthetics is not a perfect esthetics one but there is no denying that Seon Buddhism esthetics contains, to some extent, certain elements of esthetics. I presented the basic theory of Seon Buddhism esthetics systematically and foresaw it's future prospect. I tried to set up the basic foundation of Seon Buddhism esthetics studies by establishing the objects and scope of Seon esthetics and dividing the system of thought, the point of contact between Seon and esthetics and etc. The object of Seon Buddhism esthetics is Seon master's distinctive activities of esthetics. Seon Buddhism esthetics is about the existence, meaning, and value of human life. It is, essentially, life esthetics that seeks a sort of freedom of life. "Tao is from the enlightenment of Mind (道由心悟)" is the main theme of Seon thought and esthetics which was proposed by many Seon masters. In other words, the process of enlightenment is the process of esthetics realization or cognition. True nature (眞如) and self-nature (自性) are the very nature of esthetic essence. In the study of Seon Buddhism esthetics, we should not stop in seeking only the historical trace corresponding to the bibliographic records. It is quite natural for us to examine, excavate, organize, and analyze the philosophical materials of Seon school. Further more, our study should be focused to the realistic and practical discussions understood by every modern people where Seon Buddhism esthetics be in harmony with modern esthetics.

종교와 미 · 예술 사이에는 모종의 은밀하게 분리될 수 없는 내재적인 연결 고리가 있다. 종교와 예술은 우리의 생활과 생명에 커다란 고무와 새로운 가치를 부여하고 있으며 인류의 정신적 문화적 영역에서 기본적으로 변화를 낳게 하데, 이는 ‘상상’을 바탕으로 하고 있기 때문이다. 선종은 그 어느 종파보다도 생명의 진제(眞諦)를 강조하고 있다. 선종미학은 기실 이론규범이 완벽한 미학사상은 아니지만 거기에는 미학적요소를 다분히 포함하고 있음은 부인할 수 없다. 선종미학의 기본이론 문제를 체계적으로 제시하고 전망하여 보았다. 연구의 대상과 범위를 설정하고 선종과 미학의 접점, 사상체계 등으로 나누어 살펴보면서 선종미학 연구에 있어서 필수적인 기초를 세우고자 했다. 선종미학은 선사(禪師)들의 독특한 심미적 활동이 연구대상이다. 선종미학은 인간 생명의 존재, 의의, 가치에 대한 심미적 사고를 다루는데, 그것은 본질상 일종의 생명의 자유를 추구하는 생명미학이다. 선사(禪師)들 제기한 “도유심오(道由心悟; 도라는 것은 마음으로부터의 깨달음이다)”라는 명제는 선종사상과 미학의 근간이다. 다시 말하자면 ‘깨달음’의 과정이 바로 심미인식의 과정이며 진여, 자성이 바로 미적 본질이라 하겠다. 우리는 선종미학의 연구에 있어서 과거의 문헌기록에 나타난 그 대응관계에서 역사의 흔적을 찾는데 그쳐서는 안 된다. 당연히 선종사상자료에 대하여 더욱 연구, 발굴, 정리, 분석해 내야할 것이며, 나아가 이에 대한 연구는 현대미학과의 조화를 이루어 우리가 이해할 수 있는 현실적인 논의로 진행되어야 할 것이다.
