This paper examines how knowledge spillovers of a metropolitan area affect location choice. Based on a location differentiation model, we explain the effect of knowledge spillovers on industrial district locations and suggest knowledge spillovers as an important source of agglomeration in metropolitan areas. We find that as the transportation cost is lowered, agglomeration forces are intensified — both in social optimum and competitive outcome. We also find that the competitive outcome is more differentiated than the socially optimal outcome. Since allowing competitive industrial district developers to determine district locations results in suboptimal outcomes, government intervention in district development projects could improve social welfare. This study mainly focused on the economic efficiency in industrial district location, so it may need to be extended to consider the issues of balanced regional development or political incentives to appeal the constituents of less developed areas.

이 논문에서는 거대도시지역의 지식확산이 산업입지에 미치는 영향을 분석하고 있다. 이 논문은 입지차별화모형을 이용하여 지식확산이 산업단지의 위치에 미치는 효과를 설명하고, 지식확산이 거대도시지역으로의 집적에 중요한 요인이 될 수 있음을 보이고 있다. 논문의 모형에 따르면 교통비용이 하락하는 경우 산업단지의 집적이 사회적 최적기준과 경쟁적 시장기준 모두에서 강화된다. 또한 경쟁적 시장에서 결정되는 산업입지는 사회적 최적인 경우에 비해 거대도시로의 집적을 약화시킨다. 경쟁적 시장에서 결정되는 산업단지의 위치가 사회후생측면에서 최적이 아니므로 정부의 개입 필요성이 있다. 이 연구는 경제적 효율성 측면에 초점을 맞추어 산업입지를 분석한 것이므로 지역균형발전 또는 저개발지역 유권자에 대한 정치적 유인요소를 고려하여 모형을 확장할 필요성이 있다.
