Japanese Economic System had been considered as the foundation of its economic prosperity and success after World War II. However, as many pin pointed its economic system as the principal cause of Japanese long term economic recession after 1990s, the main stream argued that Japan needs to take holistic systematic reform of its economy to escape persisting recession. There exist two different arguments about the direction of Japanese economic reform: One proposes Universalism of Neo -Classical School, which strongly inclines to Global Standard and Neo-American Economic System. And the other pursues Japanese-American Hybrid or Combined System as a Comparative Institutional Analytic Approach. At present, Japanese economic system is not undergoing ‘Big Bang’ type transformation; rather, it is taking gradual adaptation process, which can also be called Gradual Evolution that largely includes the continuation of its original system in the process of reform. From the present perspective, Gradual Evolution of Comparative Institutional Analysis Approach has demonstrated effectiveness. However, it is difficult to conlude that Japanese Economic System will transform into Anglo -American Economic System in the near future.

일본형 경제시스템은 전후 일본경제의 번영과 성공의 원천이라는 평가로부터 부터 1990년대 이후 일본경제의 장기침체의 주범으로 몰리게 됨에 따라, 일본이 장기 침체로부터 벗어나기 위해서는 일본형 경제시스템 그 자체를 전면적으로 개혁해야 한다는 주장이 주류를 차지하였다. 일본형 경제시스템의 개혁 방향에 대한 논의는 대개 두 가지 흐름이 존재하는데, 하나는 신고전파적 보편주의의 흐름을 타는 것으로 「글로벌 스탠다드」(Global Standard)와 네오 아메리카형 경제시스템으로의 지향이 강하다. 다른 하나는 비교제도분석의 논자들로서 일본형과 구미형의 절충형 또는 복합형 시스템을 지향한다. 일본형 경제시스템의 변화는 결코 빅뱅식으로 진행되고 있지는 않으며, 지속의 양상도 다분히 포함된 점진적 진화라고 부를만한 적응과정이 진행되고 있다고 보여진다. 현재의 관점에서 비교제도분석의 「점진적 진화」라는 시각은 유효 하다고 볼 수 있다. 그렇지만 가까운 기간 내에 일본형 경제시스템이 영미형 경제시스템으로 전환한다고 단정하기는 어렵다.
