The research aims to explore the concept of figurative qualities shown from hairstyle of Japanese women in the Edo period according to the irrespective social standings, by focusing on its formative aspects. What could be seen as figuratively characteristic in Japanese women’s hairstyle of Edo period reveals two distinctive phases of the tendency as follows: There tends to be difference in the attitude towards aesthetics and symbolicality women’s hairstyle implies in parallel according to their respective social standings. In the case of gong-ga(公家) and mu-ga(武家), for example, their nobility and authority tend to be revealed via accessories and suihatsu(垂髮) and the increase in their social standings via mage(髷). From female public servants(女官) tend to be distinctively shown the duplicable and contingent qualities. In the case of yu-nyeo(遊女), karawamage(唐輪髷) tends to describe well a unprecedentedly distinctive contingent style by cutting the frontal hair and giving it a twist in the former part of the Edo period. In the middle period, mage, dabo and bin, all of which are shaped in different forms respectively, demonstrate unique image of ditemi(伊達美) by means of accessories. And there tends to emerge gradually akimi(粹美) that places an emphasis more on stylish beauty in the latter period. It is revealed that chonin(町人) as working class tend to emphasize the convenience and naturalness in the everyday life rather than the artificiality. Given their low social status in the then period, chonin showed their mobility and personality through hairstyle. And it is quite distinctive to see their desire to raise the social status emerge by imitating the hairstyle of the upper class.
