An analysis of the language use of bilingual children in multilingual environments 다언어환경にある자공の이언어병용の실태분석 - 한일국제결혼가정の언어생활조사を중심に -
This is a study about the actual situation regarding bilingual native languages used in international marriages between Koreans and Japanese. This study focuses on the changes in language retention, language attrition, and the change of the strengths and weaknesses of the languages in bilingual environments. The purpose of this study is to analyze whether differences occur in two groups between the times of primary school friendship and the latter half of that school friendship period. Because many precedent studies prove the ages of children being related to language attrition, the differences between these two groups have the possibility to show that age is a standard in maintaining language ability. The method of this study is the following. First, divide the subjects into two groups regarding their age. Then, show them the bilingual research cards according to the children’s age. This version of the bilingual research cards was altered to represent the contents used in Aichi preschool. Due to the changes of the language environments and as a result of this study, the period that the phenomenon of language attrition appeared was during the time of primary school friendship. At the subsequent age, the changes were not seen in spite of the changes in the language environments. As for latter half of the school friendships, the accuracy rate of the test rose in both Koreans and Japanese during the research process. This shows that the subjects made efforts not to forget the contents of the bilingual research cards, and kept it into their long-term memory. In addition, this study clarified that the vocabulary and pronunciation of the two languages had an influence on each other although there were a couple of other observations as follows: mistakes were found in the use of Japanese particles and the accuracy rate of some of the Japanese vocabulary used in the textbook was low due to the lack of time provided for continuous use of the language. This is because it was supposed that there were few opportunities to learn the Japanese language in Korea. This study is significant for suggesting a standard that enables bilingual children to maintain the Korean and Japanese languages in Korea.
