The mounting interest in regions represents a shift in regionalist thinking within which the new regionalism is articulated. In large part, regionalist thinking can be analyzed within three alternative theoretical explanations: the orthodox new regionalism, the new politics of scale or the relational topology of networked actors. This essay examines the recently hot debated regional initiative in Korea, the establishment of cross‐province Area‐wide Economic Regions (AERs), within the three alternative theoretical frameworks. Compared with the past regionalist movements, the emergence of AERs represents a fundamental shift to a new regionalism from the new localism. But, it should be cautioned to interpret AERs as the resurgence of the orthodox new regionalism. This is because AERs do not match the hollowing‐out of the state thesis on which the orthodox new regionalism is based. And it has no convincing attributes with which the politically‐inflected regionalist perspectives are called for. In the end, the emergence of AERs can be interpreted as the rise of a new regionalism that is articulated in the unique politico‐economic climate of Korea, which is structured by the most centralized state‐society combined with the neoliberalizing policy process under the globalization pressures.

본 연구의 목적은 한국의 지역정책 경제공간단위인 광역경제권을 신지역주의의 관점에서 해석하는 것이다. 대체로 지역에 대한 신지역주의적 접근은 정통적 신지역주의, 신 규모의 정치, 행위자들의 위상적 관계망 등으로 구분될 수 있다. 한국에 있어서 과거의 지역과 비교할 때 광역경제권은 국지주의에서 신지역주의적 경제공간으로의 전환을 나타낸다. 그러나 한국의 광역경제권을 정통적 신지역주의의 출현이라고 해석하기에는 주의를 요한다. 왜냐하면 광역경제권은 정통적 신지역주의 이론이 주장하는 중앙정부의 공동화를 수반하지 않기 때문이다. 또한 광역경제권은 관련된 각급 규모의 행위자들 간의 정치적 상호작용에 의하여 생산된 결과물이라고 보기도 어렵다. 결과적으로 경제공간으로서의 광역경제권의 출현은 매우 강력한 중앙집권적 정치체제와 세계화의 압력에 따른 신자유주의 정책과정의 결합으로 형성된 한국 특유의 정치‐경제적 여건으로부터 파생된 하나의 변종 신지역주의의 대두라고 볼 수 있다.
