This study intends to understand Steiner's twelve senses in depth to seek their meaning in education and concrete ways to apply them. Steiner described human senses by expanding them into 12 categories, and they are the willing (body) senses including the sense of touch, sense of life, sense of movement, and sense of balance, the feeling (soul) senses including the sense of smell, sense of taste, sense of sight, and sense of warmth, and the thinking (spirit) senses including the sense of hearing, sense of speech, thought sense, and ego-sense. These senses are understood through the close relationship with the three elements of human existence, willing, feeling, and thinking as well as body, soul, and spirit, and this study investigated the correlation between them. The characteristics of these senses were examined by defining willing (body) senses or the senses that belong to the inner side of an individual as the 'inner domain', feeling (soul) senses as the 'relational domain' where an individual has an established inner side and interacts with the world (subject), and thinking (spirit) senses as the ‘outer domain’ where the senses completely transcend the inner side and reach the world (subject) itself. These senses not only exist within the close relationship between the spiritual domain in high dimension and the spiritual existence in high degree but also maintains the close relationship between themselves, and such relationships were examined and schematized. These twelve senses of Steiner are considered to have broaden the understanding of human senses by comprehending and analyzing them in the overall and holistic view of the human being and also provided the reason and basis for the protection of our senses. Also, the twelve senses of Steiner provides great insight for educational practice, and in particular, the cases found through the practice of Waldorf education and practical aspects that can be applied in everyday scenes

본 논문은 슈타이너의 12감각론을 깊이 있게 이해함으로서 그 교육적 의미와 구체적인 실천방안을 모색해 보고자 함을 목적으로 한다. 슈타이너는 인간의 감각을 12개로 확장하여 설명하였는데, 이들은 의지(몸)감각으로 불리는 촉각, 생명감각, 운동감각, 균형감각과 감정(혼)감각인 후각, 미각, 시각, 열감각, 또한 사고(영)감각인 청각, 언어감각, 사고감각, 자아 감각으로 구성되어있다. 이들 감각들은 인간존재의 3요소, 즉 의지, 감정, 사고 또한 몸, 혼, 영과의 밀접한 관련 속에서 이해되는 것으로 이의 상관관계를 밝혀보았다. 의지(몸)감각은 인간 개체의 내부에 속한 감각으로 ‘내부영역’으로 규정하였고, 감정(혼)감각은 인간의 개체가 확립한 내부를 가지고 세계(대상)과 상호작용하는 ‘관계영역’으로 규정하였다. 사고(영)감각은 인간의 내부를 완전히 초월하여 세계(대상)자체에 도달하는 것으로 ‘외부영역’으로 규정하여 이들 감각들의 특징을 살펴보았다. 또한 이들 감각들은 각각 인간의 고차 정신영역과 고차적 영적 존재와의 밀접한 관련 속에 놓여있을 뿐 아니라 감각들 상호간에도 긴밀한 관계를 유지하고 있음을 알 수 있었는데, 그 관계들을 살펴보고 도식으로 표현하였다. 이러한 슈타이너의 12감각은 인간을 총체적이고 전인적인 관점에서 이해하고 해석하며, 우리의 감각이 보호되어야 할 당위와 근거를 제공한다고 할 수 있다. 또한 슈타이너의 12감각론은 교육적 실천을 위한 많은 통찰을 주고 있는데, 구체적으로 발도르프교육 현장에서 실천되고 있는 예들과 일상적인 장면에서 활용할 수 있는 실천적 측면을 함께 살펴보았다.
