- ‘To be used for universal communications', the original goal of the Great King Sejong'sHunminjungum is lauded. Based on the structure of the great script system, the possibility of accomplishing his goal in the era of digital technology is explored.
It is found that the phonetics of the Hunminjungum can be abstracted to 10: 3 vowel elements, ie. the sun (ㆍ, originally sky in the Hunminjungum); the earth (ㅡ); and the man (ㅣ);and 7 consonant elements, ie, ㄱㄷㄹㅂㅇㅈㅎ, The rest of the whole script system that King Sejong boasted of the capability of describing any sound in the universe, including the sound of windand dogs barking, etc can be expressed by combining the 10 symbols. Representing these 10 symbols by 10 digits, 0 to 9, therefore, the whole sound system of the universe may be digitize. Some applications of the digital expression of sounds proposed in te present paper are suggested.
