There is yet no integrative bereavement theory that can be applied widely but the theoretical change on bereavement is in dynamic progress. Therefore, there is a need for the integration of bereavement theories in different fields to obtain a balanced point of view on bereavement. So far, the main bereavement theory has focused on the clinical approachbut recently, the viewpoint is developing in a way that focuses on the extensiveunderstanding of the normal mourning process. Also, numerous traditional assumptions on the mourning process are being examined thoroughly. Care of bereavement family is a critical part of hospice and palliative care service. World Health Organization clearly states in the palliative care guideline that service should be provided for the satisfaction of desires and well-being of terminal cancer patients and the families as well as for the support of bereavement family. Presently, Korea is preparing for the institutionalization of hospice service and the rightful interest and understanding need to be demanded. In this context, this research studied the theoretical background of bereavement process of families of terminal cancer patients, experiences before and after bereavement, and the cultural meaning of bereavement process and experience. In addition, this study presented the points that has been lacked in the domestic research related to bereavement family and suggested the necessity of research on bereavement family.

사별에 대한 이론적 변화는 현재에도 역동적으로 계속되고 있으며, 사별이론은 아직은 넓게 적용할 수 있는 통합적 이론이 없고, 사별에 대한 균형 잡힌 관점을 위한 서로 다른 분야의 사별이론의 통합에 대한 필요성이 제기되고 있다. 그리고 그동안 주를 이루었던 임상 지향적 접근의 사별이론은 그 틀을 벗어나 정상적 애도과정에 대해 좀 더 넓게 이해하는 측면으로 이론적 관점이 발전하고 있으며, 그동안의 애도과정에 대한 많은 전통적 가정들은 다시 세밀하게 검토되고 있다. 호스피스 ․ 완화의료서비스에는 가족에 대한 사별관리도 중요한 한 부분으로 포함되어 있다. 세계보건기구는 완화의료 지침에 말기환자와 그 가족의 욕구충족과 안위를 위해 서비스를 제공해야 함은 물론 사별가족의 지지를 위해서도 서비스를 제공해야 함을 분명히 밝히고 있다. 현재 호스피스 제도화를 준비 중에 있는 우리나라는 말기암환자 뿐만 아니라 사별 가족에 대해서도 올바른 관심과 이해를 촉구할 필요가 있다. 이러한 맥락에서 본 연구는 말기암환자 가족의 사별과정과 사별 전후의 경험, 사별과정 및 사별경험의 문화적의미에 대해 이론적으로 고찰하고 논의하였으며, 지금까지의 사별가족과 관련된 우리나라의 연구들에서 주로 결핍되어 있는 부분을 제시하고 이에 대한 연구의 필요성을 제언하였다.
