Due to the limitation to the amount of language that hearing-impaired students can absorb from daily life, the students are not able to hear spoken language completely although hearing aids and other such instruments are provided. Therefore language education through the sense of hearing is fairly limited and this has led to the assertion that a different approach is needed, related to the sense of sight. To make the students to develop the ability to adapt to the current era of globalization, liberalization, and information technology, it is crucial to educate English as an international language, hearing- impaired or not. Building English skills and information acquiring skills through English is significantly important to improve one’s quality of life. Thus the contents and tools for effective English teaching and learning must be continuously researched and developed. This study aims to analyze the current situation of English education for hearing-impaired students, and suggest English education approaches for them such as electronic learning and ubiquitous learning using information technology and multimedia based on holistic education; which will be an alternative for the former learning system using oralism, games, and written text.

청각장애 학생들이 일상생활로부터 배울 수 있는 언어양의 제약 때문에 그 학생들은 보조기구나 다른 기구들이 제공되고 있지만 구어를 완전하게 이해하기 어렵다. 따라서 청각 감각을 통한 언어교육은 매우 제한적일 수밖에 없어서 시각적 측면의 새로운 교육 방법이 제시되어야 한다. 세계화․개방화․정보화시대에 대처할 수 있는 역량을 길러 주려면 국제어로 사용되고 있는 영어교육이 필수적이며 장애인이든 비장애인이든 영어 사용능력과 이를 통한 정보습득 능력을 키우는 것은 개인의 삶의 질을 향상시키기 위해 매우중요하다. 따라서 효과적인 영어교육을 위한 교육 내용과 방법은 끊임없이 연구되고 개발되어야 한다. 이 연구에서는 첫째, 청각장애자들의 기존 영어 교육 실태를 조사하여 그 교육 방법을 비교하고 둘째, 종전에 실시해오던 청각-구화법, 게임 놀이, 텍스트 활용에 의한 문자 교육 등의 교육방법을 보완할 대체 교육방법을 홀리스틱 철학의 관점에 근거하여 제안하고자 한다. 셋째, 정보통신기술을 이용한 전자학습이나 유비쿼터스 교육(ubiquitous learning)과 같은 전자 매체를 활용한 청각장애자를 위한 영어 교육방법을 홀리스틱 교육 철학의 관점에서 제시하고자 한다.
