Little has been known about the Austrian police system. The department of police administration has been continuously established in universities across our country since the early 1990, reaching over 120 as of now. Most universities, where the department of police administration has been established, have developed and opened the comparative police system theory. As police systems in many foreign countries have been introduced up to now, they are evaluated to provide a great help for implications which our police system needs. The comparison and analyses on police systems among countries provide us with advantages that we can refer to their good aspects in terms of institutions in an effort to have further developments in our police system. This essay attempted to focus on what kind of implications we could have while examining the Austrian police system about which we have known little in our country. We can understand that France and Germany had greatly affected the settlement of the Austrian police system in the history of wars including World War I and II. It seemed that the system from Germany has been settled down in many aspects in the general police system because both countries consist of the same people, while the military police system from France partially remains until now in the municipal police system. Especially, Austria consists of 9 states, where the federal police headquarter, 9 state police stations and municipal police system for each city and region are settled down in a good manner.

오스트리아의 경찰제도는 우리나라에 거의 알려지지 않았다. 1990년대 초부터 우리나라 대학에 경찰행정학과가 지속적으로 설치되어 현재는 120여개에 달한다. 경찰행정학과가 설치된 대부분의 대학에서 비교경찰제도론을 커리큘럼으로 개발하여 개설하고 있다. 지금까지 외국의 많은 나라 경찰제도가 우리나라에 소개되어 우리나라 경찰제도가 얻고자 하는 시사점에 큰 도움을 주었다고 평가된다. 국가간에 경찰제도들을 비교분석해 봄으로써 우리가 얻을 수 있는 장점은 그들의 좋은 제도적 측면을 참고해 우리의 경찰제도를 더욱 발전시켜 보자는데 있다. 이 논문에서는 우리나라에 별로 알려지지 않았던 오스트리아의 경찰제도를 살펴보고 우리가 얻을 수 있는 시사점은 무엇인가에 초점을 두고 시도되었다. 오스트리아 경찰은1차와 2차대전이라는 전쟁의 역사 속에서 경찰제도가 정착되는데는 프랑스와 독일의 영향을 많이 받았음을 알 수 있다. 일반경찰제도는 같은 민족인 독일의 시스템이 많이 정착되어 있고, 지방경찰의 시스템에는 프랑스 군인경찰제도가 오늘날까지 부분적으로 남아있다고 보여진다. 특히 오스트리아는 9개 주로 구성되어 있고 연방경찰본부와 각기9개 주경찰청 및 도시와 지역별로 지방경찰제도가 잘 정착되어 있다.
