The purpose of this study is to address the consonantal devoicing phenomena of Chukchee language and the assimilation and dissimilation alternations in Chukchee consonants in terms of the manner and the place of articulation. The Chukchee language (also known as Chukchi, Luoravetlan, Chukot and Chukcha) is a Palaeosiberian language spoken by Chukchi people in the easternmost extremity of Siberia, mainly in Chukotka Autonomous Okrug. According to the Russian Census of 2002, about 7,700 of the 15,700 Chukchi people speak Chukchi; knowledge of the Chukchi language is decreasing, and most Chukchis now speak the Russian language (fewer than 500 report not speaking Russian at all). Chukchi is closely related to Koryak, which is spoken by about half that number. The language together with Koryak, Kerek, Alutor and Itelmen forms the Chukotko-Kamchatkan language family. Chukchee is famous for its assimilation and dissimilation phenomena as well as the ominant recessive vowel harmony system. In case of consonantal devoicing, four voiced segments, w, r, j and ɣ become voiceless consonants (Φ, ŗ, ʝ and x respectively) in word-final position or in conjunction with a voiceless consonant. In addition, the assimilation alternations tend to be found morpheme internally and at affixation boundaries with regressive assimilation of nasality and regressive labial assimilation. Meanwhile, the consonant dissimilation happens in the respect of the velar stop to velar fricative, the repeated alveolars, the dissimilations of velars and palatals. Unlike in the case of assimilations, all dissimilation processes are orthographic with the exception of the denasalization. By adopting the data of Spencer and Krause (1908), I propose the rules dealing with the consonantal sound changes in Chukchee. However, I believe that I may need to correct and refine the rules in more detailed way if I come across more diverse Chukchee data.

본 논문의 목적은 축치어 자음의 무성음화 현상을 설명하고 조음 위치와 방법의 관점에서 자음 동화 현상과 이화 현상을 고찰하는 데 있다. 루오라베틀란, 추코트, 추카로도 불리우는 축치어는 시베리아의 극동, 특히 추코트카 자치구에 거주하는 축치인들이 사용하는 Palaeosiberian어 이다. 2002년 러시아 인구조사에 따르면, 15,700명의 축치인들 중에서 7,700명이 축치어를 구사하지만 축치어 사용 인구는 지속적으로 감소하고 있다. 또한 대부분의 축치인들은 러시아어를 구사할 줄 안다. 축치어는 그 수가 축치어의 절반 정도에 이르는 코략와 밀접한 관계를 가지고 있으며, 축치어, 코략어, 케렉어, 알루토르어, 이텔멘어등이 추코트코-캄차트칸 어군에 속한다. 축치어는 모음조화 현상뿐 아니라 자음의 동화와 이화 현상으로도 유명하다. 자음 무성음화의 경우, 네 개의 유성 자음인 w, r, j와 ɣ가 어말(語末, word-final position)과 무성 자음 앞에서 무성 자음으로 바뀐다 (각각 Φ, ŗ, ʝ와 x으로). 그리고 동화 현상의 경우에 자음의 전환은 형태소 안에서 또는 접사와의 연결부에서 일어나는 경향이 있으며 비음과 순음의 역행 동화 현상이 두드러진다. 한편, 자음의 이화 현상은 “연구개 폐쇄음에서 연구개 마찰음으로”, “치경음의 반복으로“, ”연구개음와 구개음의 이화 작용“과 같은 환경에서 일어난다. 동화 현상과는 달리, 이화 현상은 비콧소리(denasalization)의 경우를 제외하고는 모두 정자법상 나타난다. Spencer와 Krause(1980)가 제시한 축치어의 자음 전환에 관한 자료를 채택함으로써, 필자는 축치어의 자음 무성음화 현상과 동화·이화 현상을 다루는 음운론적 규칙을 제시하였다. 그러나 더 많은 수의 다양한 축치어 관련 자료를 접하게 된다면 이 규칙은 수정·보완 될 수 있다고 생각하다.
