The purpose of this study was to examine the subjectivity of TV viewers who are motivated to watch Korean TV dramas while staying USA as immigrants. By using Q methodology, 3 different types of subjectivities were identified. The first subjectivity could be named as “the type of using TV drama for an easy adjustment”. People having this subjectivity conceived TV drama as an instrument which can contribute to an easy adjustment to new environments. They were likely to focus on its instrumental function. The second subjectivity could be named as “the type of using TV drama for an emotional satisfaction”. People having this subjectivity used TV drama as an instrument which can relieve their stress. They were likely to assimilate their emotion with its context. The third subjectivity could be named as “the type of using TV drama for the cure of homesick”. People having this subjectivity used TV drama as an instrument which can release the stress caused by loneliness or foreign life. They were likely to emphasize its fun-oriented aspect.

본 연구의 목적은 해외 체류 한국인들의 한국 TV 드라마 시청동기를 밝히는데 있다. 미국 체류자의 한국 TV 드라마 시청동기를 조사한 결과 본 연구는 3개의 주관성 구조를 발견할 수 있었다. 제1유형은 ‘현지적응 활용형’이다. 이 유형의 사람들은 주로 도구적 기능에 초점을 두고 한국 TV 드라마를 시청하였다. 이들은 한국 TV 드라마를 현지적응에 필요한 주요 매체로 인식하였다. 제2유형은 ‘희로애락 충족형’이다. 이 유형의 사람들은 주로 정서적 기능에 초점을 두고 한국 TV 드라마를 시청하였다. 이들은 자신의 기쁨, 슬픔, 고통 등과 같은 감정을 드라마 속 인물에 이입함으로써 스트레스를 해소하였다. 제3유형은 ‘향수병 치유형’이다. 이 유형의 사람들은 드라마를 통해서 오락적 재미를 얻거나 고국에 대한 향수를 달래는 것으로 나타났다.
