This paper is what I presented in the conference between Korean and Vietnam on September of 2011 under the title "The Exchange and Relationship Among Confucianism and Other Thoughts Through the History Between Korea and Vietnam". I amended and complemented the paper to generally introduce the philosophical discussion and the development of the exchanges between Confucianism and Buddhism in Joseon dynasty.
First of all, I divided Joseon dynasty into early, middle and the later period and summarized the feature of every period. Joseon dynasty was a harmonious society between the kings' rights and religion. But they had continuously sustained suppression upon Buddhism through the policy of respect for Confucianism but restraint for Buddhism. Due to this policy, the general power of Buddhism had been shrunk and the rank of Buddhist monks fell into the lowest level of the society.
Nevertheless the society of Buddhism submitted the theory of conciliation between Buddhism and Confucianism and the monks barely kept themselves in existence through the exchanges with some Confucian scholars.
In this paper, I looked into how Buddhism and Confucianism exchanged their
thoughts according to the social changes, especially how they developed their philosophical discussion.

본 논문은 2011년 9월 ‘한국과 베트남 사상과 역사에 있어서 유교와 다른 사상 간의 교류와 관계’라는 주제아래 열린 한-베 국제학술대회에서 발표한 내용을 수정 보완한 것이다. 즉 베트남 학자들을 상대로 하여 조선시대의 유불교섭의 전개와 철학적 담론을 개괄적으로 설명하는데 그 목적이 있다.
이를 위하여 우선 조선시대를 전기와 중기 및 후기로 구분하여 매 시기 유교와 불교 간의 교섭내용과 철학적 담론을 개괄하였다. 조선시대는 유학자들을 중심으로 하여 왕권과 신권이 조화된 사회였지만 정책적으로는 ‘억불숭유정책’을 취하여 불교에 대한 탄압을 지속적으로 유지하였다. 이로 인하여 불교계 전반의 세력은 위축되고 승려들의 지위 또한 사회의 최하층으로 떨어지게 되었다. 그럼에도 불구하고 불교계는 유교와의 회통이론을 제기하였으며, 승려들은 유자들과의 교류를 통하여 그 명맥을 유지해왔다.
본 논문에서는 매 시기의 주요한 사회적 변화에 따라 유교와 불교 간의 교섭이 어떻게 이루어졌으며, 특히 두 종교 간의 철학적 담론이 어떻게 전개되어 왔는지를 규명하였다.
