This paper intended to examine if a debating lesson could be appropriately implemented in the elementary social studies classroom and the teacher and students accomplished proposed educational goal by engaging in debating. We often misunderstand the concept of debates as a kind of free-discussion. The reason is that nowadays a normal teaching process has a relatively great importance when compared to a feature of the debate during classroom lessons. To solve these problems, the debate with one topic can make learners to have a specific and obvious decision by selecting pros or cons. The debates can promote the development of an important ability by having students engaging in activities making arguments, taking positions, supporting those positions and reaching an agreement. For that, it is very important to introduce a debate lesson in class in a way that students can not only experience general procedure but also produce fruitful results.

본 논문에서는 초등학교 교실에서 이루어지고 있는 토론수업에서 본래의 토론(debate)수업이 가진 교육적 의미가 잘 전달되어 의도한 바가 잘 이루어지고 있는지 확인하고자 하였다. 일반적으로 디베이트가 지닌 속성과 수업이 지닌 속성이 뒤섞여 디베이트가 지닌 속성이 제대로 발현되지 못하고 단순한 자유토론방식 수업으로 전락되는 것 또한 사실이다. 이러한 문제점을 해소하기 위해 디베이트 수업에서는 학습자로 하여금 하나의 주제에 대한 찬반의 입장을 선택하게 하고 구체화된 절차에 따라 토론을 진행하도록 해야 한다. 이러한 절차를 통해 찬성하는 입장과 반대하는 입장을 단순히 확인하는 수준이 아니라 각각의 변론과 반대신문을 해보고 논점에 대한 결정을 내리는 과정까지 경험함으로써 과정적 절차의 숙지는 물론 합의형성능력 신장까지 도출해 내야 한다. 요컨대, 디베이트는 단순한 과정적 절차에만 머무르지 않고 결과적 지향성까지 의미를 지닌다는 점에서 수업에 도입될 필요가 있다.
