Jeon Woo (pen name Ganjae, 1841-1922) in Southern Jeonra Province has been widely known as a great scholar of Confucianism alongside Gwak Jong-seok (pen name Myeonwoo, 1846-1919) in Southern Gyeongsang Province for his adherence to orthodox Confucianism during the end of the Chosun Dynasty. Jeon Woo tried to recover the sovereignty of the nation through education and about 2,000 followers learned from him. He is surely regarded as an academic ancestor92). The followers of him showed their unique solidarity even during hard times and they continued their teacher's will and made a strong stand against the Japanese Empire while keeping their school and defending traditional culture. In addition, they made efforts to maintain their homogeneity by writing the books of Gwanseonrok․Yeonwonrok. Seongsasimjeseol (性師心弟說), prescribed by Ganjae, led his students to the compliance with prescriptivism and fundamentalism, making it possible for them to leave clear traces in terms of the practice of integrity and tradition preservation in history. In that process, writers and younger students who are from Northern Jeonra Province took a leading role. And in that sense, discussions mainly based on 'Northern Jeonra Province' in this study have a good reason for it because such approach helps find characteristics of his thought by distinguishing the region from other provinces.

호남의 대유(大儒) 간재 전우(1841~1922)는 영남 출신 면우 곽종석(郭鍾錫: 1846~1919)과 함께 조선 유학의 대미를 장식한 인물이다. 교육을 통해 국권을 회복하고자 했던 그의 문하에서 2천 명이 넘는 문인들이 배출되었다. 간재는 실로 거대한 학파의 학문적 조상(學祖)이다. 간재의 문인들은 어려웠던 시절
에도 남다른 결속력을 보여주었다. 그들은 스승의 유지에 따라 일제에 저항하면서 학파를 지속시켜 왔고 전통문화를 수호하는 데 앞장섰다. 또『관선록』ㆍ『연원록』등을 만들어 학파의 동질성을 확인하는 데 힘썼다. 간재의 성사심제설(性師心弟說)은 문하 제자들을 규범주의, 원칙주의(원리주의)로 나가게 하여, 의리 실천과 전통 수호의 측면에서 큰 발자취를 남겼다. 이 과정에서 전북 출신 문인, 후학들은 선도적이고 주도적 구실을 하였다. 본고에서 논의를 ‘전북지역’에 국한시킨 것은 단순하게 범위를 줄인 것이 아니다. 간재학의 본거지인 전북 지역을 타지역과 구별하여 그 학문적 사상적 특성을 찾기 위함이다.
