Everyone feels the allurement to go to see beautiful sceneries. When we are tired and stuffy of ordinary life, we want to take a view of natural landscape. On this account, our predecessors took pleasure in visiting a scenic pavilion and appreciating the wonderful sceneries spread out around it. The scenic pavilion, named in nu(樓) or jeong(亭) constitutes a beautiful landscape accompanying the oneness with natural environment. The walls of scenic pavilion architecture are opened and simply composed of pillars. Thereupon, its inner space and outer space become one, and in this space we naturally become open-minded. The scenic pavilion was a kind of productive space to make and develop art and learning. It was a stronghold of spiritual enjoyment of practicing studies and making poems. It was a space for poongryu(風流) or elegant life which relishes beautiful nature and recites poems. It was also exercise hall to cultivate human personality through viewing the nature and contemplating its meaning. It was a site of centripetal force for literati scholars to manage and invigorate their aesthetic life. It is precious space for us to recover our sensibility and to recognize wisdom of human life, In this paper, we are trying to investigate how the scenic pavilion takes the role to build up Korean or Eastern aesthetic consciousness. For this purpose, we inspect its origin and meaning, analyze its types and arrangements, and think over its functions. Thus we examine closely various significant meaning, such as nature appreciation, relaxation, learning and friendship, and communication in the culture of scenic pavilion. In short, we explicate the humanistic meaning of scenic pavilion which make a space for elegant life.

우리는 사계절의 뚜렷한 변화 앞에서 아름다운 자연 풍경을 찾고 싶은 유혹을 느낀다. 그래서 옛 선조들은 세속을 떠나 누정에 찾아가 머무르면서 산수를 즐겼다. 누정은 한국인의 자연관과 인생관을 잘 나타내주는 문화적 산물이다. 누정은 자연을 거스르지 않고 자연과 하나가 되는 공간적 의미를 지니면서 아름다운 풍경을 만들어낸다. 누정의 벽면은 개방적이고 기둥으로만 구성되어 있어서, 안과 밖이 하나가 된다. 이러한 열린 공간 속에서 자연스레 우리는 열린 마음을 갖게 된다. 누정은 학문과 예술을 싹트게 하는 창조적인 산실이었다. 강학을 행하고 시상을 일깨우는 정신적 향유의 거점이었다. 누정은 아름다운 자연을 완상하며 시가를 읊고 한담을 나누는 풍류의 공간이었다. 또 관조와 사색을 유도하는 가운데 자유로운 정신이 발휘되는 인격수련의 장이기도 하였다. 누정은 지금 우리들에게도, 하늘과 구름을 쳐다보며 물과 바람의 흐름을 느끼고 달과 별을 쳐다보면서, 생생한 감성을 회복하고 진정한 삶의 지혜를 얻을 수 있는 소중한 장소이다. 이 글에서는 누정문화가 한국인 나아가 동양인의 미의식을 형성하는 데 어떻게 기여하고 있는지를 해명한다. 먼저 누정의 개념과 기원을 고찰하고, 그 다양한 공간배치를 통한 유형을 검토하는 가운데, 나아가 관상, 강학, 소통, 휴식 등 인간의 현실적 삶 속에서 수행하는 기능들을 살펴본다. 이를 통해 누정이 동양인에게 있어서 다름 아닌 풍류의 공간으로서 중요한 인간학적 의미를 지니고 있음을 밝힐 것이다.
