The purpose of this study is to investigate the significance of the moral education through the comparison between the ethics of care and the ethics of compassion. Care is based on natural caring as it is completed by both the one-caring's engrossment, motivational displacement and receptivity, recognition, response of the cared-for. Compassion is a panhuman love to be extended to all living organisms and it is basically rooted in the idea of dependent origination that all living beings are in a mutually dependent relationship. The ethics of care and the ethics of compassion have similarities in human emotion, affirmation of its expression, importance of the relationship, and sublation of a self and others. However, there are also differences between care and comparison. The former focuses on face-to-face relationship but the latter emphasizes indiscriminate universality. In line with it, the ethics of care requires completeness from cared-for while the ethics of compassion does not obsess with an object or a result. Therefore, if we seek a way of procuring philosophical support and the university by the ethics of compassion and simultaneously search for improving method, technique and system applicable to both educational curriculum and school itself through the ethics of compassion, there will be remarkable implication in moral education.

본 연구의 목적은 배려윤리와 자비윤리의 비교를 통해 도덕 교육적 의의를 고찰하는데 있다. 배려는 배려자의 몰입과 동기적 전이, 피배려자의 수용, 인식, 반응을 통해 완성되는 것으로 그 바탕은 자연적 배려에 있다. 자비란 살아있는 모든 생명에게 확대된 전 인류적 사랑으로, 모든 존재하는 것들이 서로 연결되어 있다는 연기의 사상에 바탕을 두고 있다. 배려윤리와 자비윤리는 인간의 감정과 그것의 발현에 대한 긍정, 관계성의 중시, 자아와 타자의 지양에 있어서 유사성을 보인다. 그러나 자비는 무차별적 보편성을, 배려는 직접적인 관계를 핵심으로 한다는 것과 자비윤리가 대상이나 결과에 집착하지 않는데 비해 배려윤리는 피배려자에게서의 완결성을 중요시한다는 점에서 차이를 보인다. 자비윤리를 통해 철학적 기반과 보편성을 확보하면서 배려윤리를 통해 교육과정과 학교현장에 적용 가능한 방법․기술ㆍ제도의 개선을 모색한다면 두 윤리가 도덕교육에 던지는 의미가 더 뚜렷하게 살아날 것이다.
