This paper examines the meanings and characteristics of higher-order thinking, and three aspects of Higher-Order Thinking. And then this paper proposes Ethical Community of Inquiry as a method which can cultivate Higher-Order Thinking.
Moral thinking has multi-dimensional aspects in reason, emotion, and imagination. Therefore, moral thinking is re-conceptualized into Higher-Order Thinking with multi-aspectual practical wisdom. Higher-Order Thinking is dynamic and challenging mental processing that facilitates reasonable judgment grounded in criteria and context. It is composed of three aspects, namely critical, creative, and caring thinking, and maintains reflective equilibrium of these three aspects.
The best environment in which Higher-Order Thinking can be exercised is dialogical environment. Moral education should include the ethical inquiry. The value is created by dialogical inquiry in classroom as revealing the essence of moral situation by transforming the problems of human life into the problem of inquiry. Moral thinking and communal emotion should be developed by considering what is more reasonable in definite situation because right and wrong is changed by the context. Therefore, Community of Ethical Inquiry is a suitable model to develop Higher-Order Thinking in moral education.

이 논문의 목적은 도덕적 사고의 필요충분조건인 고차적 사고력의 개념과 범주를 명확히 하고, 이를 함양할 수 있는 방안으로 윤리적 탐구공동체를 제안하면서 실제 도덕 교실 안에서 이루어지고 있는 일련의 과정을 통해 이것들이 어떻게 실현될 수 있는지 그 가능성을 탐색하는데 있다. 고차적 사고는 비판적·창의적·배려적 사고라는 세 측면이 끊임없이 상호작용하면서 반성적 평형을 이루어가는 다차원적인 사고과정이다. 그리고 도덕과 교육을 통해 이러한 고차적 사고의 제 측면들을 향상시키기 위한 가장 적합한 교육환경은 다른 사람들과 의견을 주고받을 수 있는 대화적 환경인 윤리적 탐구공동체이다.
