The purpose of this study was to identify the characters of practical arts subject matters by critical review on restructuring practical arts education focused on career, and propose the operating methods for practical arts education. The contents of this study were summarized as follows. First, practical arts education should stand out the characters as of the subject matters supporting the students to give meaning by themselves through experiencing work-related learning and to develop their aptitude and capability through exploring their open possibilities. Second, practical arts education should move its characters toward the education on the daily life of share and care, the education based on career experience activities focusing on creative work-related learning and the education to raise students’ abilities to practice the lifestyle living together with others in daily life and to raise career development competency through exploring the world of socially valuable vocations. Third, practical arts education should contain career exploration activities in the practical arts education curriculum for the students to identify the diversity in vocations, and to have vocational aspirations on the career field dealing with the overall learning contents of practical arts education.

이 연구의 목적은 진로를 축으로 한 실과교육의 개념 및 성격을 규명하고 실과교육 과정의 재구조화 방향을 제안하는 데 있다. 연구의 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 실과교육은 학습자가 일에 관한 경험을 통해 스스로 그 의미를 부여하고 자신의 열린 가능성을 탐색하여 적성과 소질을 계발할 수 있도록 도와주는 교과로서의 성격을 가져야 한다. 둘째, 실과교육과정은 나눔과 배려의 일상생활에 관한 교육, 창의적 노작 중심의 진로체험활동을 통한 교육, 학습자가 일상생활에서 더불어 살아가는 생활양식을 실천하는 능력과 사회적으로 가치 있는 일의 세계를 탐색하여 진로를 개발하는 능력을 함양하기 위한 교육으로 변모해야 한다. 셋째, 실과교육은 다루고 있는 학습내용 전반과 관련된 진로분야에 대해 학습자가 일의 세계에 대한 다양성을 인식하고 이와 관련된 직업적인 포부를 가질 수 있도록 하는 진로탐색 활동을 교육과정 내용 속에 포함하여야 한다.
