This study sought to focus on the synopsis and framework of classic ballet “Giselle” and Seoul Ballet Theater’s “She, Giselle”, so that it could make a feministic analysis on potential implications of feminism for the life of heroine who appears in “She, Giselle” that is a contemporary remake of classic ballet “Giselle” and a ballet performance produced by Seoul Ballet Theater. Classic ballet “Giselle” invoked a strained sense of dramatic tension, but was based on a relatively simple plot. However, it showed passive attitudes without resisting any fixed femininity and female roles or seeking possible ways to overcome them in the context of storytelling, but revealed a female image with lost subjectivity. Besides, this work was criticized by researchers in Marxist and feministic world for class distinction and sexism, because it was based ‘thematically on social classes’ and contained a main story to tell that ‘a woman of working class becomes exploited by a man of nobility.’ On the other hand, Seoul Ballet Theater’s “She, Giselle” would end up in ignoring any actual experience and life of women, if it tried to view the life of Giselle in terms of chastity and fidelity. However, if a woman exerts her free will to live as prostitute and enjoys her own life with material compensation from prostitution, it is possibly concluded that she lives a feministic life in negative sense.

본 연구는 서울발레시어터의 에 나타난 여주인공의 페미니즘에 대해 분석하기 위해 페미니즘 이론과 매춘에 대한 논의를 정리하고, 고전 지젤작품과 서울발레시어터 지젤의 플롯분석을 하였으며 다음과 같은 결과를 도출했다. 첫째, 고전 지젤과 현대 지젤의 플롯을 비교 분석한 결과 고전 작품은 배경과 인물구성, 이야기 전개에 차이가 있음을 알 수 있었다. 고전 작품은 낭만주의 시대의 로맨틱한 배경과 여주인공 스스로 신분계급의 현실을 이겨내지 못하고 알브레히트의 배신으로 죽음에 이르는 나약한 여성상을 그렸으나, 서울발레시어터의 지젤은 삶에 대한 주체적 선택으로 페미니즘 의미를 구현하였다. 둘째, 두 작품의 스토리 분석을 통해 작품이 속했던 시대의 여성성을 엿볼 수 있었으며, 또 변화하고 있는 페미니즘의 의미를 재해석해볼 수 있었다. 21세기 현대판 지젤이라 할 수 있는 서울발레시어터 She 지젤의 내용 역시 시대의 흐름에 맞추어 변모되는 페미니즘 관점에서 해석될 수 있다. 지젤의 삶에 대해 순결이나 지조의 문제에만 초점을 두어 해석한다면 여성의 처한 현실적인 문제, 사회구조를 외면하는 결과를 가져올 것이다. 결론적으로 고전 지젤은 로맨틱한 낭만주의 시대의 무대를 배경으로 소극적, 연약함을 간직한 여성으로 사후에서도 헌신적인 사랑을 보여주지만 서울발레시어터의 지젤은 유곽으로 가서 새로운 인생을 시작하는 페미니스트의 모습을 구현하였다.
