National Human Rights Commission of Korea (NHRK) was established under the "Principles Relating to the Status of National Human Rights Institutions" to protect human rights. The foundational purpose of the Commission was to protect human dignity and value and to establish democratic order, thus the organization and it's constitution should remain independent.
NHRC has been working on areas such as investigating human rights status; expressing recommendation or opinion on human rights related law, institution, policy and practice; submitting comments to Court and Constitutional Court; urging the government to ratify International Human Rights Convention and stating recommendation or opinion on implementing the Convention to promote human rights situation domestically.
Reinforcing remedy for human rights violation is also a main part of the task. NHRC receives petition on human rights violation and discrimination. By investigating and finding remedies the Commission monitors and prevents human rights violation by government authorities and also rectify discriminatory act.
Also NHRC contributes in publicizing human rights violations and discriminatory acts and setting agenda on human rights issues.
Facing the 10th anniversary, NHRK has analyzed and evaluated the main tasks and achievements. It is meaningful to look back and reflect; to seek the direction the Commission should pursue depending on internal and external situation and to also look into institutional matters.

국가인권위원회는 ｢국가인권기구의 지위에 관한 원칙｣에 따라 설립된 인권보장기구로서, 인간존엄성과 가치 구현, 민주적 기본질서 확립을 목적으로 설립되었기에 조직과 구성에 있어서 독립성이 유지되어야 할 것이다.
국가인권위원회는 설립 이후 인권상황에 대한 실태조사와 인권 관련 법령 ․제도 ․정책 ․관행에 대한 권고 또는 의견표명, 법원과 헌법재판소에 의견제출 그리고 국제인권조약의 국내 이행을 촉진하기 위해 국제인권조약의 가입 및 그 조약의 이행에 관한 권고 또는 의견표명 등의 업무를 수행하였다.
그리고 인권침해 및 차별행위에 대하여 국민이 진정을 하게 되면 이를 조사하고 구제함으로서 국가공권력에 의한 인권침해를 감시․예방하고 있고, 차별행위를 시정하는 등 대국민 권리구제활동을 강화하고 있다.
또한 인권침해 및 차별행위 등을 국민들에게 알림과 동시에 인권문제에 대한 사회적 의제 설정에 기여하였다.
특히 국가인권위원회는 올해 설립 10주년을 맞이하였기 때문에 위 주요업무에 대하여 분석하고 평가하였다. 위와 같은 분석과 평가를 통하여 제도적인 문제점, 그리고 대내외적 환경변화에 따라 국가인권위원회가 지향하여야 방향을 모색하는 것은 의미있는 일이다.
