This is a local history of Korean War in Seoul through war memories and narratives of Seoul residents including Seoul natives. This article attempts to reconstruct the war experiences of Seoul residents during the Korean War with their life histories. Seoul residents could not escape from the North Korean Army because of the explosion of the bridge of Han river. They had to endure the three months under the regime of People’s Republic of North Korea. Only 1/3 of Seoul population escaped from the North Korean Army, who were mostly government bureaucrats, police officers, soldiers, right-wing politicians. Especially ordinary Seoul natives didn’t have any relatives in other localities and thus had nowhere to take a refuge.
Therefore the period of domination by People’s Republic of North Korea was long enough to the most of Seoul residents who had no choice but fleeing for safety within Seoul or pretending to cooperate with the North Korean regime. During the period of recovery in Sept. 28 in 1950, they had to go through trials and slaughters by the local right-wing activists and shortly to leave Seoul for survival wherever they were able to go upon the war participation of Red Chinese Army. Seoul natives returned to Seoul as soon as possible since they had to deal with hardships with little assistance from the local people. Since the spring of 1951, returned Seoulites began to inhabit their houses in Seoul which was in such a stillness. They started to build new Seoul which was destructed with bombs and battles before the South Korean government did not return. The reconstruction of war experiences of Seoul residents should be regarded as local history of Seoul which is different from national history.

이 연구는 서울토박이를 포함하여 서울사람들의 전쟁에 대한 기억과 이야기들을 통하여 서울에서의 한국전쟁이라는 역사적 사건에 대한 지방사 연구이다. 그래서 이 연구는 서울에서 한국전쟁을 겪은 사람들의 생애사를 중심으로 서울사람들의 특수한 전쟁경험을 드러내고자 하는 것이다.서울사람들은6·25가 나자마자 서울이 인민군에 의해 점령되었고 한강다리가 폭파되었기 때문에 거의 피난을 가지 못했다. 이 시기 피난갈 수 있었던 사람들은 전 서울 인구의 1/3로 정부관리, 경찰, 군인과 우익정치인, 월남인들이었다. 따라서 서울에 남을 수밖에 없었던 사람들 중 남자들은 서울 내에서 이리저리 도망 다니면서 숨거나 또는 좌익에 협조하는 척하며3개월 동안의 인민공화국의 지배 속에 살았다.9·28수복이 되어 지방 우익들에 의한 학살이 시작되었으나 곧 중공군의 참전으로 1·4후퇴 이전인 12월 초부터 서울사람들은 생존을 위해서 대부분 피난을 떠났다. 그러나 서울 토박이들은 지방에 연고에 없었고 자신들의 가산이 서울에 있었기 때문에 되도록 빨리 1951년 초부터 서울로 돌아왔다.반면 월남인들은 서울이 확실하게 수복이 된1953년도에나 서울로 돌아왔다. 일찍 돌아온 서울 토박이들은 폐허와 정적 속의 서울에서 전후 복구와 새로운 삶에 대한 희망을 만들어갔다.이와 같은 서울주민들의6·25경험은 서울의 지정학적 특징뿐만 아니라 당시 서울에서 살고 있었던 사람들의 지방적 특수성을 보여준다. 즉 강을 건너지 못했던 서울주민들의 6·25경험은 서울이라는 지방의 전쟁 경험의 특수성을 보여주는 것이다. 따라서 당시 서울사람들의 전쟁 경험은 문헌 중심의 한국전쟁 연구에서 서울을 한국(남한)과 동일시하는 경향에 대하여 서울의 지방적 특수성을 보여줌으로써 서울의 지방사 복원에 기여할 수 있다.
